Geauga Lake's Wildwater Kingdom lives on

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

The old Geauga Lake Park lies vacant, its buildings and rides sold off and its once-jammed parking lot empty except for flourishing weeds. The screams of delight, the tinny music emanating from rides and the wafting aroma of cotton candy have given way to silence except for the birds that swoop occasionally over the desolate landscape.

Across the lake, however, Wildwater Kingdom springs to life for the summer season, its second since its neighboring amusement park closed abruptly in 2007.

The one thing that jumps out at me from this story is you just can't please anyone in Northeast Ohio! First it was Aurora/Solon/Bainbridge/Streetsboro/Twinsburg HATED the parks because of all the summer traffic, noise and everything that comes with theme parks in a community. They did ZERO to help the parks succeed. In my opinion they actually aided the demise of the parks by their actions of blocking permanent improvements like the widening of SR 43 for decades. Why would a company due business somewhere that they are not wanted?

Now they are going to boo-hoo about loss of tax revenue, loss of jobs, loss of tourism. WTF?!?!? Everything is destroyed by the loss of Geauga Lake and Sea World; memories, culture, tourism, job growth, community pride (for those who cared and loved having the parks close by) and now all that is left is a vast wasteland of weeds and rotting structures.

Between this mentality level and the corruption by elected officials in Cleveland and Cuyahoga County it will be a miracle if anyone is left living in Northeast Ohio in 10 years. All the smart folks are getting out NOW.

Why does this make me giggle? I guess it's the idea that an entire geographical area would clear out of residents completely because of elected officials. hee hee. ;)

Sigh.

What I'm discovering is that, with GL gone, I'm making fewer park visits in general. It used to be I'd hit Cedar Point 8 times or so a season, Kings Island twice, Kennywood and Waldameer once or twice, and then maybe one medium-to-big trip to a different region of the country for a week or so. And maybe 8-10 ten visits to GL over the course of the season, because it was so close.

When GL went, I figured I'd just add more trips to KW or Waldameer to make up the difference, but it simply hasn't worked out that way. I don't want/need to visit CP more than I do, and it takes planning and time to schedule a trip to the others. Geauga Lake was just so easy to hop over to on the spur of the moment for a few hours. I don't have that option any more.

Guess that, through whatever means and for whatever reasons, things just change. On the bright side, Ava and I are hiking more.

I worked a couple of miles from the park for two years, and barely went, even for lunch. I suppose I was part of the problem. Or the product of the problem.

I knew it had to be your fault somehow. ;)

The only conspiracy I see is the irony that Jeff still posts these news items on his site when he signed off on shutting down the park. He's only doing this for more clicks on his site.

Obviously, you've never lived in Schuylkill County. :)

I'm sorry, but this one comment to the article made me laugh out loud.

" Will you all just get over it already? It was a business decision, nothing more. It's been two years and you all just keep bringing upconspiracy theories. Give me a break. And while you're at it, pleasespend $20 to join my coaster club so I can yell at you on our forums. " (submitted by Hypocrisy Buzz.)

Or maybe I did but I moved 'cause I'm smart! ;)

And as for the comment, that was really stupid. Seriously. You can totally get yelled at in the forums for free! Duh! :)

And that's exactly one of the reasons I dig Jeff and this site. If what you're doing pisses someone off that much, then you're doing something right. I'm absolutely proud to be a part of it in my own tiny way.

I think it's great that someone harbors that much resentful importance on this site and Jeff's little ol' opinion.

Jeff, FTW!

I definitely agree. There's really no credence to someone who sulks off and bad mouths this site or Jeff or whoever. People get challenged here. But it's because of those challenges that we end up having some great discussions and the overall credibility of the site goes up.

Why would anyone want to be a part of something less than that?

*sending support, but not willing to hoist Jeff onto her shoulders in celebration... sorry* :)

God forbid you and Nasai come to Fall Affair. It's really about time he gets back out here. Gonch better be there as well. It'd be like the "brain trust" no Scrubs. Rob would be the janitor, Moosh would The Todd and Gonch can be Ted.

Nothing is as funny as a bunch of schmucks who loath this site (and apparently me for my extensive role in shutting down the park) so much that they can't stop visiting it and serving up those ad impressions which pay for my gas to go to other parks. It's a sign that the world is more right and just than we think.

I am going to try to get out to the water park this year since I have a Platinum Pass, but if the food pricing is in line with the other Cedar Fair parks, I suspect I won't be spending any additional money there. I do hear that it really looks much better without the ski stadium there.

If both Nasai and Gonch attended I'd have to start looking for flights. Throw in Carrie and it would be hard to say no!
