Playland opened in 1955, six weeks before Disneyland. It turns 70 this year. But unlike Disneyland, which is also celebrating its 70th anniversary, Playland is facing an uncertain future. The financial realities of running such an institution have changed dramatically, a park board member says.

This is a case of the concessionaire trying to bring in a different clientele and alienating the existing one. They should have looked at what was done with the Enchanted Island in Encanto Park in Phoenix did. While the original concessionaire who installed rides for the "rebirth" of that park in the 1980's didn't renew his contract the succeeding one has seemed to have done quite well.
