For Aussies: Dreamworld buys Big Dipper

G'day guys,

My first post here, so I'll try and make it informative.

It was reported in Brisbane's Courier Mail today that Dreamworld has purchased the Big Dipper from Sydney's Luna Park. The article can be found at:

http://www.couriermail.com.au/common/story_page/0,5936,2014728%255E3102,00.html

Just in case they remove these stories from their page each day, I'll post the article here.

Now, some questions from those who have ridden on the Big Dipper.

First, is it any good? I'd heard rumours that Dreamworld were going to build a wooden roller-coaster as thier new attraction, which I was certainly looking forward too. Will this make a good substitute?

Secondly, the article mentions that it will form the center-peice of a $5m new attraction. How much would you estimate the Big Dipper would cost. I'm just wondering if Dreamworld have any more tricks up their sleeve.

Finally, any idea where this ride is going in the park? Is the thunderbolt being taken down? It would be my least favourite ride at Dreamworld, and it always seems to have somewhat short ques.

Anyway, cheers.

G'day efleming,

You're the 4th Aussie to join us. There is aussie op, ozdude & myself. Yeah, we knew this for a while as a rumour. Looks like its been confirmed! The Dipper cost $7 million to build in 1995. If it's just $5m now, I don't think the park will modify it. Who knows if it will replace Thunderbolt. The woodie is still a rumour. Someone said they saw land that has been cleared of trees at the back of the park & might have seen surveyor flags on the ground there.

The Dipper is fun, there's nothing marvellous about it. IMO, it could have done with a few more inversions. You guessed it, I'm a fan of inversions. I agree, Thunderbolt sucks. Tower of Terror is my favourite Aussie ride. It's great fun! (I live in Sydney BTW). Have you been in the Big Brother arena?

You may want to submit this as a news items as the mods could close this thread for that very reason.

Screamscape's news & rumours section on Dreamworld; http://www.screamscape.com/News___Rumors/Rest_of_the_World/Dreamworld/dreamworld.html Note it's slow as they're looking for a faster server.

See ya around here somewhere,

Taipan.

Havn't seen the Big Brother area, can't say I'm a big fan of the show :)

I've got my fingers crossed for a new wooden roller coaster at Dreamworld, we've kind of been spoiled up here recently with Dreamworld's latest rides (ToT and Giant Drop) which are leaps and bounds ahead of anything else in the area.

Though, I must say, one go on the Giant Drop was enough for me... it just scares me too much :)

I am really glad that this Wonderful Arrow is being moved into where people will have more chances to enjoy it.
The Sydney Morning Herald has confirmed this story :( - http://www.smh.com.au/news/0105/22/national/national21.html

I'm sure it will get the attention it so badly deserved in its new home.
I have been in contact with Gold Coast operators who have told me they believe the big dipper will replace the thunderbolt. This is unconfirmed, but will we shorty know as they start construction (dismantlement?), to open befor Christmas
