Eight fire engines were called to Chessington World of Adventures, in Surrey, after the fire broke out at its Creaky Cafe venue. The site, which is being used as a Santa's Grotto, is near the zoo area of the park and animals were moved to safety by their handlers. The fire broke out on Saturday morning before visitors had arrived. The park said that no staff or animals had been hurt.

Sadly, an elf currently identified only as "Hodges" was found deceased, apparently from smoke inhalation, once the fire was extinguished by firemen on scene.

"It's devastating", explained an unidentified elf after learning of the discovery early this morning. "He [Hodges] was pivotal in our wooden train department, and will not be easily replaced, especially this late in the season."
