Expoland, the operator of Expoland amusement park in Suita, Osaka Prefecture, announced Wednesday it had filed for bankruptcy protection under the Civil Rehabilitation Law with the Osaka District Court on Tuesday. The operator of the park where a roller coaster derailment killed a woman and injured 19 other passengers in May 2007 has liabilities totaling about 1.6 billion yen. The firm explained that the drastic decrease in visitors to the amusement park, due in part to the long suspension of operations after the fatal accident, have hurt the firm financially.
