Wanted to pass along a tip to read 'The Devil in the White City : Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that changed America' by Eric Larson. It's a non fiction work built around the Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago. This fair was the home of the world's first- well, if you don't know I won't spoil this part of the book for you, as it's an object of some dramatic tension, as the heads of the fair strive to 'out Eiffel Eiffel'. It centers on two stories. One, the tale of the man who was charged with the epic task of constructing the fair in less than three years. The other, intertwining story is of H.H. Holmes, America's first Serial Killer, who used the crush of humanity coming to the fair as an opportunity to satisfy his... curiousity. The chapters on the constuction of the fair are at once revealing and awe-inspiring, and leaves the reader with a sadness that nothing like this will ever be seen again in their lifetime, nor likely ever.
Anyway, it's a vibrantly written book and should be of interest to anyone with an interest in Men who dream big. If they don't have it at your library it's on sale at Amazon for $15. Highly recommended.
