Epcot's revised Test Track opens next month, this time with Chevy sponsor

The Test Track presented by Chevrolet reopens Dec. 6 in Disney's Epcot's Future World pavilion in Florida, after designers from both companies spent months working on making the attraction into a sort of professional design studio that will give riders a virtual experience in auto design. In January, Disney and GM announced they had entered into a new multi-year alliance and would work with Disney on a new ride experience.

Now that that area has opened I was hoping to hear more about it.

There are two great things.

The first great thing is the "waiting room." I'm not sure how large its capacity is---or, equivalently, how long of the total wait would be spent in the room. I think I remember hearing it can hold up to 20 minutes standby, which isn't that long. But, as Jeff did, we rode it when the attraction wasn't terribly busy, so we were told we didn't have to wait, but could look around. It's really quite well-done, aimed squarely at Dumbo's target market (pre-school kids.) There are climby-jumpy places, but because the interior is wood/tent, it doesn't get as loud as it probably could. The area is ringed with benches that parents can sit on while the kids play. For the most part, you can see your kid from most places, but there are some climbing sections where you will lose sight. It has blessed AC.

The second great thing is that there are now two Dumbos, *and* they've added Fastpass to it. The increased capacity looks like it should keep up with demand for all but the busiest afternoons, and Fastpass can solve that problem.

All in all, the waiting room is nice, but the doubled capacity is much much nicer. In fact, the ride has so much spare capacity that on low- to moderate-crowd days, the Pooh Fastpass machines also spit out "Surprise" Fastpasses for Dumbo to draw more guests over there!

The rest of the area has a lot of other great features. The water play area is a huge win for younger kids who need some unstructured playtime. (And, they will get soaked). The new meet-n-greets for Daisy/Minne and Goofy/Donald, have new circus costumes for the characters, and surprisingly detailed sets. The merchandise tent has a candy kitchen in the middle that is like the Confectionary, but "in the round." The train station/bathrooms have lots of little details all over the place.

New Fantasyland is slap-you-upside-the-head spectacle. The circus area is just as effective, though. MK has really solidified its position for the preschool/early grade school demo.

Technically, the circus is part of "New Fantasyland."

I keep crossing those wires, but you're right. New Fantasyland contains both Enchanted Forest (the "upside the head" bit) and Storybook Circus.

I rode the first day it "soft" opened and am kind of indifferent to it. The design phase was cool. After you design the car, you scan your card before you enter your ride car and as you go through the building it ranks each of the cars designed by each individual rider to see which car would perform best for each "test" phase. I believe they do tests based on handling, performance, economy and there is a fourth I can't remember. Then when you get off the ride it gives you an overall score of the car you designed and has the best designed car of the day posted.

After that, you can design a commercial for your car and email it to someone. I can't see waiting a long time for this ride. The actual ride portion seems kind of boring. They took out the environmental tests section and all the bumps. Now it just seems like a car ride through a building with lots of neon type lights. I'm not sure but it seemed if you fastpass the ride or baby swap that you don't get to design your own car which makes the ride even more pointless. I could be wrong on that but I couldn't see where there were any design areas for those people.
