Enjoy Driving

Driving has never been anything like a coaster for me. Taking little scenic/crazy curve routes & such, there's a danger that exists in just the thought of detouring for fun. While I can't say I've never done it;), you should ALWAYS drive in a fashion that makes you arrive safely at many destinations. I've seen some nasty car crashes, even witnessed some car deaths, it's no fun.

But, there's more a fear factor than coasters for me in being a passenger. I'm a big baby unless I'm passing out or distracted. It freaks me out riding shotgun. I slam on the floor like I've got pedals, cover my eyes, hold on, it's all very uncontroled, my wife hates it. That's in where the funny part comes, I'm far too relaxed, I'm told, when behind the wheel. There are people who are afraid to enter the motor vehicle when it's operated my me. It's not anything on purpose, though.

But always, even if you're a speed demon, distance is something to remember, it can save more than just your life. I hate driving near other cars, & hate drivers who drive near me.

Some driving scares me more than coasters. Weather I am driving or not, I still get scared if we are going 90 or something. I love getting airtime in cars though, like if your going down or up a hill with train tracks on it, that is fun.

Hey Antuan, I know EXACTLY what you are talking about. What a GREAT freeway. They should charge folks to drive on it...Auto Dips style.

PS...Not that I condone it, but going 'slightly' faster than 70 is even greater on that stretch. ;)

There's nothing fun about having to share the road with people who are out to achieve AIRTIME in a car. JMHO, but my butt has only left the seat of a car maybe once or twice, & there is nothing fun about that. There is a proper way to drive in those ways, & it does not involve a public highway system.

Just "knowing what you're doing" or driving in a "professional style" IS NOT a NASCAR license to kill, LOL. Take the road seriously.

BTW, I'm the proud owner of 2 Honda Civics, both with 200,000 miles on them, maybe it's because I didn't drive the cars in a manner that destroyed their longivity.

I've had the pleasure of owning some fine driving machines, including a Jetta GLX, a Porsche 944 turbo, a Tiburon, and an Infiniti G20. I also have the pleasure of paying 204 bucks a month for insurance now as a result of the tickets I got driving these cars (94 in a 65, 57 in a 35, etc). I now drive a Santa Fe LX 4WD V6, which does not inspire me to drive fast at all. However, it does cruise along comfortably at 80 on I-64 between HW and SFKK.

p_c_r: FYI, 70 is pretty slow on that freeway...as it is on most freeways in California. I think that it is ok so long as folks maintain similar speeds and adequate following distances. Oh...and don't weave in and out of traffic like a lunatic. Hate that!

You can keep a car in good shape and drive fast. Just make sure you change the oil regularly.

Antuan, back to dips in the Bay Area (myself excluded), did you ever hit the one on 6980 near Martinez? That thing was insane. Airtime doing 45-50mph! Caltrans was continually trying to fix the thing, but the section was built on soft soil...kinda like Maggie (;

I've never been on 680 actually, but I know what you mean with the soft ground theory. Back when I used to live in the East Bay the ripples on the highway that leads up to Dumbarton Br. were huge. I caught myself clutching to the steering wheel many times for fear of losing control.

"I caught myself clutching to the steering wheel many times for fear of losing control."

That pretty much sums it up, LOL.
Driving "fast" is OK, maybe, but it's NOT OK. At speeds, distances for steering & braking are increased greatly.
Plus, as is the case for most roads, there are famalies, friends, pets, peoples' lives in those other cars.
Shouldn't be taken lightly.

Changing oil preserving the integrity of an auto that's speed demoned? Common misconception. Cars that are stressed are stressed evn with oil changes. It's very common for people not to want to buy used cars that have been driven by "young people". Why? Because they think they're taking care of the auto. Cars are major pollution, especially junked autos. That's where these cars end up, too. Did I mention my Golf that had OVER a half million miles on it? I could've been in a commercial!

Besides, cars are your basic transportation to ride coasters, that's the only relationship they should have.

Oh, well, I guess you people have never seen somebody thrown through a windshield.

Driving reminds me of coasters only when speeding down a long hill... Which I don't really do..

Don't look forward to driving in relation to coaster riding...

Well...the stretch of road we speak of feels like this well below the posted speed limit. No excuse I'm sure, but probably less dangerous than going significantly slower than the flow of traffic.

Yes...braking distance is increased...that's why one obeys the 3 second rule.

And driving "fast" on the freeway with all the other cars doesn't wear out a car like city street driving.

Please don't assume that I am reckless or do not care about others lives because I enjoy driving. I don't know if I made this clear, but although I drive fast, I still drive much slower than folks in the fast lane around these parts. I go with the flow in the second lane...and that's still really fast. I slow down for rain, keep three seconds following distance...and never talk on my cell phone.

But I still REALLY enjoy those dips! Sorry!

Does driving remind you of Roller Coasters in anyway. I haven't had the chance to experience driving yet cause i'm only 16 but people tell me that I will like driving becasue love roller coasters. They aslo said that I will be a stable driver because I can handle the G-Force?!?(strange)

You've never driven and you're 16? My older sister had her permit when she was 15 and as a 16 year old now she has a license (and a problem with having to take me places :~)) Anyway, what g forces? You might get minor laterals on a sharp turn, but that's it. You don't get much airtime when you're driving or pull 4 g's at the bottom of a bridge.

Three seconds at about 75mph should be more like eight seconds, LOL. The higher the speed, the longer the braking distance, the much further from the cars in front of you you need to be.

I don't mean to be a spoiler, it's just nobody's came out & said "be careful", or "take it seriously". Airtime in a car is something you've really got to work for, no? It requires some driving conditions that are, well, not normal.

Anyways, highway miles can be easier on a car, that can be true. Usually, cars that are abused were driven in a quick, NASCAR kinda way. Not enough motorists think about their car AFTER they've finished with it, people are generally happy to "..get rid of my old piece".
"Don't screw around, y'all screw around too much.";)

Biking, that CAN be a little more like coastering. Subways, don't know, never ridden one, but cars? Zoom, zoom!

You don't get speeding tickets on coasters.
