While your intentions are not to be disrespectful, they are. Calling CP "SP" is an obvious typo. It's great that you enjoy the post but if you really had, your first reply would've been something positive to appreciate the content of the posting. We are here to talk about coasters and this in particular is about an engineering group that went behind the scenes at CP. Start a forum on grammer since your so absored with spelling vs. coasters.

Secondly, is this not a forum about Cedar Point (CP). BandandDCI already abbreviated Cedarpoint as CP in his second paragraph. I read this forum and could easily tell that he made a typo. However, I did not deem is necessary to be petty and pick on things that are so small. I conclude my point and will now continue to talk about what this forum was made for.... What does 'absored' mean? All i could find was a medical abbreviation for abscessed sore which really doesn't fit.

I think it's awsome that OSU has a Theme Park Engineering Group!!! I'm a student at Tennessee Tech University and we don't have nothing like that... and we're a Tech University! lol It would be great if we could get something like that started, because I know a few people who are attending TTU for that reason... including me! So my question to you is, how was this group established? Our campus is maybe 2 or 1 1/2 hours away from Dollywood too and it would be great if we could go there and learn a few things. Let me know because I would like to start something like this at my university too. Thanks!

Before I get to what I'm going to say below, I didn't do much to proofread. I was up at 3am then went to the park all day. Doesn't sound like a lot, but I was worn out beyond all belief, and wanted to post before i passed out, and forgot.

But to continue, We just started this group this past year, and surprisingly it's doing really well. the interest hasn't sparked our campus until lately with all the hype CP has made starting with Dragster. We were in high School and had minds set by then where we were attending college.

Our T.P.E.G. founder got in touch with the Engineering College, and got the master list of engineering students. He sent out a Email for the masses. And about 40 people came to the meeting.

From there, my schedule forced me to miss the general meetings, as well as the Design meetings. The Design meetings were for a starter project, mostly composed of Rank ones and twos(Fresh and Sopho). They decided to design/improve rides such as Power Tower at Cedar Point. Also, another section of the group, designed a new lay out of a roller coaster to possible present at IAAPA Expo.

We've been collecting contacts and business cards from engineers and other official of different parks to coordinate an event or educational tour into the parks. Cedar Point being our base park was priority to take a visit. Our President emailed Monty Jasper who worked out a date and time for the group to visit the park.

What I didn't mention in the main post were a few specifics about the ride, and specifics dealing with Power Tower and Dragster. The Engineer who walked us around, worked most with Dragster, so by the end of the visit, we knew it like the back of our hand.

We also plan on taking another trip before the end of the summer, OSU summer. So around early September. I'll talk to our President, and see if we could invite others from other colleges(Tenn Tech, Cleveland/Detroit, and Boston U). Considering parks in the General Big Ten Area, our next trip probably be KI, SFKK, or HW.

VaRyda: What college do you attend?

Is Mechanical Engineering the typical degree held by a coaster designer? I'm an Astronautical Engineering student at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, but back when I started high school I wanted to design coasters.

That's what I was told. I'm supposed to do a little but of work in Civil Engineering too.

Mechanical Engineering for the design of the coaster trains

Civil/Structural Engineer for the design of the track layout.

Electrical Engineer for the design of the power and electrical circuits.

It's typically the major most go into when they want to design. However, many other engineering disciplines contribute to roller coasters in some sort.

Like off the top of my head:

EE - Electric wiring design/format, like electrically-insane coasters.

MSE - Train Seat materials

Aero - Design of the train, so that it is Aerodynamic to increase air resistance

Civil - Stability of the coaster in relation to the terrain

Software - Computers.

Welding - Not every weld on coasters are the same. (Only accredited at OSU)

ChemE - Type of Fluids used for and also within the coaster.

Eng. Phys - Coasters=Physics

I'm sure there are plenty more engineering fields that help with the design and build of roller coasters.

E_tapley I attend Boston University. I recently organized a huge trip to SFNE on Sunday July 22nd. This however wasn't a trip for engineers. Just a general outing for students at my school for the summer. I am very excited especially to see that your group has been able to gather contacts from engineers who work within the parks. I've always said that if I don't get to design rides myself that I'd love to be that engineer who pretty much gets to learn everything about these top-class thrill rides. I think the group that you started can expand to some other campuses such as mine and we could possibly organize trips to IAAPA so that all the chapters could get together. Or we could organize conferences if we could get individuals from CP and/or other Parks come in and give presentations. (i.e. The trip your particular school took to CP could be turned into a presentation by thge Engineer who gave the tour and info could visit schools like mine *if possible* and show us). As you see I am very excited about this. BandandDCI I will send you a message. Also could you elaborate on the Design projects you said your group was doing with Power Tower etc... Was this just a fun project or was it actually something you were asked by the park to do for them?
