Pardon the Reddit link, but I can't find any videos on YouTube that are as good as the first-person video there. Guests at Disneyland got an extra spicy show last night.
Given, as Gonch pointed out, Disney's proficiency at setting things on fire, you'd think their response would be a little bit more involved than a cast member spraying the dragon with a garden hose.
(In a separate video, taken from a different perspective after the first one ends, the hydraulic fluid spraying from the dragon catches fire as well and landed not far from where said cast member was standing.)
Leaving the “burning” question: Just when IS the appropriate time to break character and get the hell outta there?
“Oh, I just had to be a stilt walker”, they said…
I missed out on Fantasmic at Disneyland because of Galaxy's Edge construction and I only ventured into the Florida version one time nearly 20 years ago. I realize I'm tip toeing onto sacred, holy ground here, but I've never seen it again because I walked away from that one viewing with a resounding "Meh." I just don't get it. Maybe it's me since I'm also a guy that has the same reaction to Disney parades with the exception of the Storm Trooper march and the Magic Kingdom Halloween party parade.
Glad no one was hurt, of course. Can’t help but chuckle how many people probably just stood there thinking “Wow, what fantastic special effects!”
I don't get Fantasmic either, but it pulls people away from the other attractions.

The new version at DHS is 10x better. They got rid of the Pocahontas section and replaced it with some quick vignettes of heroes (Around the Riverbend/Pocahontas, I’ll Make a man out of You/Mulan, One Jump/Aladdin, Show Yourself/Frozen 2, I am Moana/Moana) that just makes the show flow so much better. They also added better lasers.

To be fair, there is a body of water between them and the burning hulk.

Based on the angle the guests appear to be near the viewing area by the Golden Horseshoe. Google Maps says they are a good 180 feet from the center of the stage on Tom Sawyer Island. I think they were more than safe from a 45 foot tall burning dragon.
Unless you mean the guests at Disney World. In that case I totally agree. I would have been slowly backing away.
I responded to that incident and was completely shocked at how comfortable people were just standing so close without the thought of “Maybe we should move away from the fire that is getting larger.”
