Drachen Fie being dismantled

Posted | Contributed by thrillman

The work to dismantle Drachen Fire, the five-inversion Arrow Dynamics steel coaster at Busch Gardens Williamsburg, began last week. Work is expected to be completed by opening day in mid-March.

Drachen Fire is going to hell. And a New Intamin will go in its place, AND THE GODS WILL LOVE IT.

As sad as I am to see Drachen Fire's coffin officially nailed shut, at least this will end the speculation about what will happen to the ride (at least I hope).  Unfortunately, its now time to bring on the rumors of what will replace Drachen Fire...

An Arrow 4-D?

B&M flying coaster?

Intamin giga Impulse?

GCI triple racing? :)

I would love to see this ride at Great Escape if at all possible. I went to BGW in spring of 2000 and I saw this awesome looking coaster that I wished I could ride. I looked like a great ride and I would love to see it at Great Escape if Great Escape gets anything. I hope that it doesn't get torn to pieces cause I looks worthy of a new train and some work to make it a good ride.

Im stuned not really we all knew something bad was gonna happen. The worst part is that the park acts like nothing happened and doesnt even care. The should name the new coaster (if they get one) something having to do with DF Ithink that would be great.
Noooooooooooo!!!!! This is terrible. I hope something good will take its place like a GCI twister, or a B&M Flyer or Floorless. :(

May Drachen Fire Rest In Peace.
IntaminAG1,

Hell???  GODS loving it?

This is a coaster forum, not a theology dispute.  Don't be a moron.

Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like bananas.

That'd be cool to see it at Great Escape, but they should keep the Steamin Demon as well.  I hope that BGW replaces it with another coaster at least.

This is very sad news.  I like Taipans idea of Dragon's Flight. They could also hire B&M to rebuild it ,same layout and everything, and call it, Return of the Dragon.  I can only wish though.

Now I only hope that a small unknown park will get it to put them in the spotlight.

*sniff*

September 11... the day that changed history, and exposed us all to pure fear and saddness

Great. More fuel for the "anti-Arrow" fire. Remember kids, it's a business, and they do what they have got to do. I'd rather see something torn down than taking up usable space, regardless of who built it. I am glad to have experienced it, and I think a tribute needs to be created in No Limits! I've already tackled it in RCT. And BGW needs a woodie! What a nice area for one.

Model coasters and rides
Hey, on the slight bright side, the moderators will not have to worry about the numerous DF Opening Rumors.  I never got to rode it, but there is nothing much I can do about it.
I say they sell it in little parts on ebay, I call a car! (i need a new chair)
I think that Busch Garden's decision to tear it down was a good one [although I LOVED the colors].  Nobody ever rode it!  All three times I went to BGW when the coaster was open, there was no line for it [and the lines for the Loch Ness and Big Bad Wolf were SUPER long]

I think this lack in ridership is the reason for their initial corkscrew tear-out as well as their final decision to shut it down.  It was a waste of electricity, and the good news is that now they will probably consider putting something else in its place!

The destruction came at the right time with the installation of Ireland as a new country - if I'm not mistaken, Drachen Fire is within the vicinity of Ireland, thus probably donating to their decision to finally tear the sucker down.

I don't think Busch Gardens will be consulting Arrow for another coaster again - B&M or Intamin all the way - possibly a super-nice flowing standup.

They don't really need to put anything else in there the next couple of seasons. They do fine with what they've had, LNM, BBW, et cetra. I went to BGW before DF, & after DF's run, what they offer, poor coaster SBNO aside, is a great package. Oh well, sure, I'd liked to have gotten on her, but I cannot do anything about it, things that cannot be changed cannot be changed. I just hope all those people that must've been complaining are really OK, you know? Good times aside, if there were issues, they needed to be addressed, and if it was none of our(the public's) business, they shouldn't have been expected to "come public" with whatever it is/was(especially if it was linked in any way to info about a person/victim). I did meet a girl in Richmond that SWORE her aunt received a compensation from Busch due to an injury involving DF, but anybody can say anything.
For all of you who are wondering why it closed (as I heard from a park employee on the railroad, and later found the news paper article online):

A girl split her skull open while going through the boomerang, and had to have some brain surgery.  The park got some real bad press from the accident, and many coaster enthusiasts and "experts" said the ride design was to blame.  That is why the lines were so short.  Very few locals rode the coaster, so the line filled with tourists.  I only waited five minutes to ride it, and only rode it twice, then proceeded to take some pain killers.  The ride was the best thing that had ever happened to me until the boomerang, and then it went right to the top of the head banger list.

I also have a '96 DF poster I’ll take a picture of and post somewhere if anyone is interested, along with the newspaper story if I find it.

As for what will go in DF's spot....well, the possibilities are endless.  For those of you who have ever stayed at Kingsmill Resort, and have wandered back to the Woods Golf course, than you will have some idea what I’m talking about.  The wooden decorative fence that you see from the railroad (in BGW), is about 10 feet from the Kingsmill road on the other side.  On the other side of the road, there is nothing but around 50 or so acres of clear, slightly hilly land, that goes all the way down to the earthen dam that keeps water in the Rhine River (which you can also come within 5 feet of on the golf course road).  This would allow plenty of room for some new attractions, and at least 1 new coaster.  I was thinking that an Impulse, B&M Flying, and S&S tower would go nicely.

(BTW, the resort is gated, with a 24 hr. police officer there, so don't think you can go right in and have a look.  However you can get in if you have some family that lives there, or if you schedule a spa visit.  Some, work in progress pictures would be desired.  This may also be the best way to watch for new construction.  Busch is doing something very secret between the end of the parking lot and turnaround of Apollo’s Chariot, woods course, and highway.  There is an access road that connects with the golf course road and highway, so that’ll likely be where track or other ride pieces come in.  There is also a security gate to get into the park by the maintenance area, near the Caribou train station.  So that’s where track may be stored too.)

I'm glad. I hate that ride. It's so painful. Even though it's sad to see any coaster dismantled, I'm not so hesitant about this one. Actually, I hope they even get it down before March rolls around.
SFoG should trade the Ninja for Drachen Fire.  It would be worth it.
Drachen Fire was the park's multi-looper, I think the dragon will live on, just as something else....
Well, its always a sad day when a coaster gets torn down. It hits even harder for us who didnt ride it or those who love it. What I mean is that I will never be able to experience this coaster, and that makes me sad

SOB crew in 2002

I wonder what they are gonna do with the trains from Drachen Fire?  Will they use them for parts, use them on LNM, sell them back to arrow?  I hope they put them up for auction or sell them kinda like Kennywood.  That would be the greatest souvenir.  So does anyone know what they are gonna do with the trains?
