Dorney plans to add second wave pool to spread crowd

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom wants to build a second wave pool near the park's main entrance because the current pool gets packed on hot summer days. The $4.5 million project — officially named Wave Pool II — is scheduled to open for the 2006 season. It would be about one-third smaller than the current wave pool.

Bad move. They should re-consider and build a 'tsunami' class pool like the defunct 'the Wave' at Geauga Lake. Why? Because there is no other that size on the East Coast, and it could be an attraction upon itself. They could build a whole host of f/b attractions and a beach lounge adjacent.

The old wave pool, is in my opinion too small to begin with. To build a smaller pool just will not assist in alleviating crowds, as they will flock to the new one, and over crowd that one. Build the Mambo sized pool, (good name), then re-furb the old one and make it for families only. That would be a great asset to Dorney.

Smaller wave pools have been the rage for a while now. The larger one's provide more complications in operation.

Cedar Point's Soak City has only 1 wave pool (though, granted, they do have two laze rivers which eat up capacity) and it is one of the "smaller" ones.

AJ: While I like the idea, the 'hardcore' pools are just like woodies...great things best left to the independent operators.

Didn't they just refurbish the existing pool a few seasons back? EDIT: Scratch that--that was '04.

This move has nothing to do with attracting more guests, or having something great to market. It's all about helping capacity. They old wave pool is a good size - but the popularity of the water park has grown each year.

They already have two lazy rivers to help, but another pool is needed - badly. And on top of that - the positioning of it is really just the start of the next expansion of Wildwater Kingdom.

Yet another way Cedar Fair is working to make their waterpark more enjoyable for guest.
Wave Pool II is one of the more original names I have ever heard...
Well, seeing that they already have a 'Thunderhawk' and a 'Dominator', they may have been outta CF-names-that-get-dropped-on-just-about-anything.

But at least they have the original 'Thunderhawk' and 'Dominator'. Putting that name on an SLC is embarrassing! :)

And I agree, I think there will be more additions to the waterpark coming soon. The spot where Wave Pool 2 (right out of RCT!) is larger than just the size of the pool. There will be plenty of room left over to add some slides and other attractions.
