Dollywood announces Lightning Rod, a wooden launched coaster

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Themed after a tricked out 1950s-era hot rod, Lightning Rod launches riders from zero to 45 mph more than 20 stories up its lift hill to one of the ride’s first airtime moments. At the crest of the hill, riders face twin summit airtime hills before tackling the daring first drop. Lightning Rod races down the 165-foot drop and propels guests along its 3,800-ft. track to a top speed of 73 mph, the fastest speed for a wood coaster in the world.

Don't say that...

Hopefully the train theming holds up a little better than Cedar Point's attempt with TTD...

Ask not what you can do for a coaster, but what a coaster can do for you.

Also gotta say that quadruple down is making my mind think of Boulder Dash, but in many other, much more dolly, RMC ways!

I didn't see this discussed anywhere else but if it is sorry. Dollywood released the full POV for Lightning Rod and my God does this thing look amazing. I do not see how this cannot be one of the top coasters in the world but we shall see come next March :) They also released a 3d virtual reality POV like CP did with Valravn.

Man that quad down looks to be the most insane element on a coaster I have seen.

Booked a cabin for the 4th of July weekend. Looking forward to getting back to the Smokies for some hiking and coasters!
