The entire time that DCA was being built, it only sparked my interest a little bit. We have all heard about their original plans for "Westcot" being scrapped. Then the budget cuts, the "less than Disney quality" rides that were going in, and the fact that there were only 2 roller coasters for opening, and one was just a standard mad mouse. Let me tell you this, forget all of the negatives you have heard and go to this park, it is excellent!!
A good friend of mine works at the GRAND Californian, an absolutely gorgeous hotel!! I live in the area, but I really want to spend a night or two in this hotel, it is just so cool! He also tells me that the GRAND in the name is actually an acronym: Guest Requests Are Never Denied. He gave me the 5¢ tour, wow!
We entered through the hotel gate, he got us in for free, and we received 50% off food, not bad! It was only 9:15 and the park was still empty, so I suggested Mulholland Madness, since the throughput is rather low. It was a walk-on! The small amount of theming on this does help, but I always love a good wild mouse. If you have not seen the rolling stock for this ride yet, you have to. They are so cool!
Next up, the Sun Wheel, another slow loader. Getting there early sure pays off, 5 minute wait!! This is truly a coaster lover's Ferris Wheel, the swinging cars are awesome. Due to the positioning of the cars, the purple ones swing a bit more, so go for a purple one. Orange cars also are on the tracks, but due to where the wheel stops, they give less of a swing, according to my friend who has been on it several times. Red cars do not swing, but afford the best view. This is a must do for a coaster lover.
Next up, California Screamin', we were greeted by a friendly ride-op letting us know that it was currently down. We went to Sorain' Over California, long line, got a FastPass.
Muppets 3D: HILARIOUS!! If you liked the Muppet Show, you will love Muppets 3D. Even though there are LOTS of mid-course blocks, they DO NOT slow the train at any of them!! Through the day we rode it 3 times, front, back and middle. This is by all means, a front row coaster, start to finish: more air, a really good launch, and of course, the front row view. The middle was OK, and the back was pretty dead. All in all, even though this is something of a watered down version of other Intamin loopers, I give this ride a positive review. I think a "coaster snob" would not like it, but I was pleasantly surprised. I expected a "C-", and got a solid "B", in my estimation.
Soarin' Over California: Although this was not 3D, this movie, combined with the INCREDIBLY IMPRESSIVE seating/motion mechanism is possibly the best attraction in the park. The feeling of flight is simply unparalleled, another must ride! I highly recommend FastPass on this one because they have only 1 out of 2 theatres up and running right now. It is supposed to be at full capacity for the Feb. 8th opening, however.
Orange Stinger: I sat this one out, I hate those spinning swing rides. The music was pretty cool. sounds like bees are making the music inside the giant orange.
Grizzly River: Simply put, the best rapids ride on the face of the planet. No gimmicky characters, no cheesy waterfalls, just AWESOME theming and 2 drops. YES, drops on a rapids ride. The last drop actually makes the raft spin as you descend, VERY cool, and very wet! Also, the sheer height of the lift is awesome!
MaliBoomer: I have never been on an S&S space shot, so this was pretty cool! I think I like it better than a turbo drop. The restraints have this horrible "motorcycle windshield" directly in front of your face. Even though there are LOTS of mid-course blocks, they DO NOT slow the train at any of them!! Through the day we rode it 3 times, front, back and middle. This is by all means, a front row coaster, start to finish: more air, a really good launch, and of course, the front row view. The middle was OK, and the back was pretty dead. All in all, even though this is something of a watered down version of other Intamin loopers, I give this ride a positive review. I think a "coaster snob" would not like it, but I was pleasantly surprised. I expected a "C-", and got a solid "B", in my estimation.
Soarin' Over California: Although this was not 3D, this movie, combined with the INCREDIBLY IMPRESSIVE seating/motion mechanism is possibly the best attraction in the park. The feeling of flight is simply unparalleled, another must ride! I highly recommend FastPass on this one because they have only 1 out of 2 theatres up and running right now. It is supposed to be at full capacity for the Feb. 8th opening, however.
Orange Stinger: I sat this one out, I hate those spinning swing rides. The music was pretty cool. sounds like bees are making the music inside the giant orange.
Grizzly River: Simply put, the best rapids ride on the face of the planet. No gimmicky characters, no cheesy waterfalls, just AWESOME theming and 2 drops. YES, drops on a rapids ride. The last drop actually makes the raft spin as you descend, VERY cool, and very wet! Also, the sheer height of the lift is awesome!
MaliBoomer: I have never been on an S&S space shot, so this was pretty cool! I think I like it better than a turbo drop. The restraints have this horrible "motorcycle windshield" directly in front of your face. Oh dont worry, the characters will be out in full force soon. And both sides of Soarin are up and running. Isn't that a ride ride??!!! I love it, even the que inside is great with the epic music and pictures. And those shields on Maliboomer are actually there to reduce noise of people screaming. Same as the tunnels on the hills of California Screamin. Did you get a chance to ride superstar limo? Slowest ride on the planet. LOL

Yes, I did ride Superstar Lame-o, I mean Limo, I tried to edit the message, but the edit feature was not working. This is a "miss if it has a long line" Typical Disney dark ride, but with plenty of ABC stars tied into it. Rodger Rabbit's CarToon Spin is MUCH better.

I checked your track record to see if you have been to IOA soggy but it does not look like it. Just wondering how Grizzly compares to Popeyes BRB's.
From the sounds of the park though it does not sound near as good as IOA.

On California screamin does it have a lap bar or a shoulder bar. If it has a shoulder bar does it hurt your head?
It has a shoulder bar. No worries, though. It is really smooth, no headbanging at all. It makes me want to see more Intamin loopers here in the US.

I went on Feb 4th. This is a really fun park! I was pleasently surprised by the high quality on nearly every ride. THe park was packed the day I went, but I did get to see almost everything. California Screamin' was fun, not the scariest coaster I've been on by any means, but still a good ride. Grizzly River Run absolutely rocks. By leaps and bounds the best rapids ride anywhere. This one is perfectly themed, and the two drops are amazing. Even the lift is fun with the leaky pipes. Soarin' Over California was a truly incredible ride! this one is the best. As for superstar limo, it is painfully obvious that Disney went terribly cheap on this rides budget leading to a mediocre at best ride...Too bad, as it was a great concept for a ride!! Muppet Vision and It's Tough to be a bug were lots of fun, the kids will love muppetvision. This park is great fun. I am looking forward to visiting again in a few weeks. (I am a passholder) By the way I will do a much more detailed park review for DCA in the future!
