Disneyland will close starting Saturday after governor limits gathering

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

From the Disneyland site:

While there have been no reported cases of COVID-19 at Disneyland Resort, after carefully reviewing the guidelines of the Governor of California’s executive order and in the best interest of our guests and employees, we are proceeding with the closure of Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park, beginning the morning of March 14 through the end of the month.

The Hotels of Disneyland Resort will remain open until Monday, March 16 to give guests the ability to make necessary travel arrangements; Downtown Disney will remain open. We will monitor the ongoing situation and follow the advice and guidance of federal and state officials and health agencies. Disney will continue to pay cast members during this time.

Disneyland Resort will work with guests who wish to change or cancel their visits, and will provide refunds to those who have hotel bookings during this closure period. We anticipate heavy call volume over the next several days and appreciate guests’ patience as we work hard to respond to all inquiries.

Please contact The Walt Disney Travel Company for questions and cancellations at (714) 520-5050.

Read the notice from Disneyland.

This is sad, but not unexpected.

I expect the rest of the parks will close as well now

I have it on good authority that there's an announcement coming from Orlando tomorrow.

I would be surprised if they didn’t shut down after everyone else has.

If the mouse goes, I would expect other chains to follow suit. I am not completely up to date with what other states have declared, but Ohio's restrictions are pretty black and white. Right now the mandated closures take us up to the week before Kings Island's opening day (the 11th).

Promoter of fog.

Cedar Fair is planning to open its parks on schedule, according to the message the CEO sent out to the mailing list today, but things have changed so quickly that it’s way too early to put any stock in that plan, one way or another. Kings Island’s date is April 11th, which is 30 days away.

The CEO statement was issued I believe before DeWine issued the mass gathering order. No doubt things are rapidly changing. Speed and breadth of closings/cancellations are stunning.

I totally get it. Here in CA things are not enforceable but everything is basically, "Don't gather unless you absolutely have to. Like, for real. Don't do it. I'm looking at you." Except schools. Public schools are going on with business as usual.

Hobbes: "What's the point of attaching a number to everything you do?"
Calvin: "If your numbers go up, it means you're having more fun."

Carowinds has opening weekend starting tonight - no word on cancellations, other than the CEO email yesterday saying everything was still on.

Damn, sounds like a great opportunity to marathon Fury!

Public schools all over Central Indiana are closing, starting today and for the next 3 weeks. Since this includes 2 weeks of spring break, the actual number of lost school days is fortunately not that high. Still, it feels pretty drastic. It's not clear to me why this pandemic is worse than the H1N1 pandemic of 2009, which ended up killing hundreds of thousands of people and was not nearly as limited to older people as the current virus seems to be. And yet, the response to this season's coronavirus is obviously extreme and unprecedented. I mean, sports are like literally not happening right now. What the hell are they even talking about on ESPN?

Carowinds is scheduled for next weekend. Not sure if that'll happen after Disney and Universal pulled the plug last night.

You're right. I had my dates wrong.

And Cedar Fair parks are now closed as well.
