Disney plans resort for Oahu

The Walt Disney Co. plans to build a family resort in Hawaii, but it won't be an island Disneyland. Walt Disney Parks & Resorts announced Wednesday it has bought 21 acres of oceanfront property on the western side of Oahu that it will use to build an 800-room hotel complex. The resort, Disney's first without a nearby theme park, will emphasize family-centered vacations while respecting Hawaii's culture, said Disney Parks & Resorts Chairman Jay Rasulo.

That sounds like a lot of fun. We went parasailing off the coast of Maui and that was unreal. I expected it to be good, but not that good. We wanted to take the road that circles the island but we went right after the earthquake that hit last year and a few bridges were out, making that drive impossible. Next time we go back, we're definitely doing that and diving... and maybe what Moosh just suggested.

We wanted an oceanfront room at that Sheraton but they were unavailable so we had to "settle" for a really nice room across the street overlooking the courtyard. You're right Jeff, the restaurants at the hotel were amazing and even though we didn't check out all the beaches, I'm inclined to think that was the best beach in Hawaii. We had an oceanfront room in Maui and that was amazing.

Man, talking about this really makes me want to go back.

The nightly mai tai's at the torch lighting with the house band didn't hurt either.
Yeah, we did that two or three times. For free drinks, those things had a nice kick. It was nice walking around after dark with all the tiki torches burning along the waterfront. I'm wishing we had done the luau but we ended up doing one on Maui.

Ooooh, I have to agree with the Kauai being one of the better islands. I went there for the first time last year and the place was so green it was almost blinding. The Grand Hyatt hotel has some awesome pools and grottoes with watersides. Also liked that there were wild chickens running around everywhere, especially at Waimea canyon. Isn't the wettest spot on earth on Kauai also?
I remember the chickens. I also remember a lot of stray cats in Old Koloa Town.

Yes, the wettest spot on the planet is in the interior of Kauai, which is so weird because you can be on certain coasts and not see a drop of rain for a week. But hey, you've seen the waterfalls everywhere. Pretty amazing stuff.

The wild cocks (bracing for 'Moosh joke) are everywhere! I shot a lot of video and photos of them. Also quite a few red-footed boobies up around the north side, near the lighthouse (I forget the name of that shore, but remember that it's extremely dangerous water).
