Disney petitions the FAA for drone use in nightly fireworks shows on both coasts

The Walt Disney Co. has filed for an exception to FAA rules in order to use drones for entertainment purposes at Walt Disney World. The application includes some of Disney's safety precautions and planned operations for the drones, including a restriction as to where it would not fly the crafts, including not within 100 feet of guest areas at all times.

Living next door to Magic Kingdom, it has been interesting to see how sophisticated the shows have been getting the last two years (I have not actually seen Wishes from inside the park in that time). The New Year was pretty cool, with exploding numbers that counted down to midnight. They're regularly doing exploding smiley faces and cubes in the regular nightly show.

We saw some sort of patent application for this a while back. We could get into some serious Close Encounters of the Third Kind schtuff.
