Disney maintenance crashed our car at Epcot

Totally. I don't understand how cars roll over on flat, straight roads, but I see it constantly here.

The Taycan wagon is sexy AF!

Still can't get me to work and back though.

99er:

I have considered starting a Youtube channel with daily videos of the dumb sh!t my dash cam sees on my way to work.

It becomes an obsession. I used to maintain this blog (https://www.tumblr.com/sillydrivers) but I lost access when I lost my domain name and email address. Just don’t become like a motovlogger that share the most mundane interactions with people.

Lord Gonchar:

is a $50k car something people aspire to?

I aspire to never pay $50k for a vehicle. Looking at what I likely would buy to replace my current vehicle (goal is another 5 years), it would be under $30k. Current car was about $4k less than that 10+ years ago. Given my age and number of vehicles I am likely to purchase going forward, I like my chances. My wife on the other hand will be a greater challenge though ultimately $50k will be a threshold she will want to avoid as well.

Should Tesla owners feel special? No idea. Odd to me the vehicle you drive would make you special. I know a fair number of people who believe that the vehicle you drive is more important than where you live because more people will see you in your vehicle than your house. That doesn't make sense to me. But I am not a car guy.

Ultimately, in my limited experience, if you ask someone who drives a Tesla if they are special (whether its because of the vehicle they drive isn't clear though it seems to me its all intertwined), many more Tesla owners will answer in the affirmative than the general population. Same I think would be true of people with vanity plates.

I don’t aspire to pay 50k for my next car, but I expect that will be the ticket price. My trade in will lessen that, but thanks to Covid, I paid off my loan on my 2020 (bought in Dec 2019 my most successful market timing of my life) car in less then a year and it’s now my goal to never have a car loan again. My car is 4 years old, and has 80k miles, which means I’ve probably have less than 2 years until I’ll be buying another one.

Jeff, do you think you’ve just had a run of bad luck or is Central Florida just a dangerous place to drive?

It is one of the most expensive places to insure your car in the country for a reason (Top 3)... But seems to be a mix of "no fault" state, uninsured people driving around and yeah, probably a lot of accidents (tourists, among other things).

Ohio for example, is one of the lowest surprisingly enough. On my State Farm policy I have three vehicles (18' Camry Hybrid, 2010 Mazda 3 and a 2021 Camaro SS) and in total I am paying $772 total for six months with $500K/$1M bodily and uninsured, $250K property and $250/$500 comp/collision deductibles on all but the Mazda (no comprehensive on that one).

A pair of Tesla Model Y's ($50k and $42k when new) for me are $1,600/half from Progressive. But on the plus side, I don't have to pay state income tax, which would be about $8k per year, local income tax of about $4k, and my property tax relative to property value is half of what it was in Brunswick, Ohio. Sales tax is even a half-percent lower. So the net gain for avoiding winter is still a win.

But housing is more expensive in general (depending on region of course), but as a high level look:

Ohio median housing cost $220K

Florida median housing cost $362K

Depending what source you look at, of course, but the spread is similar... $142K give or take, is not insignificant, even with the savings in taxes you can avoid year to year. Then you throw in auto insurance being 2-3x, homeowners insurance is likely higher given the weather risks, etc... I'm sure the spread is greater than you think.

Wait until you see what happens to your insurance rates when your son starts driving.

I've found that everyone, or at least those that live in major urban areas, thinks that wherever they live at any given moment is home to the worst drivers in the world.

Since insurance rates are tied to the risk, I think it's safe to say that Flori-duh is definitely not going to win any excellent driver awards.

SteveWoA:

It's not. I did the math before I moved here, and did it again recently as we start to game out post-childrearing. Still winning. With the increase in property values, I'm super-winning even. I went from zero to a half-million in property equity in ten years, and that's pretty typical in the area. Even if it wasn't financially better, not-winter has tangible value to me.

I've lived in a few different states and never thought that until I moved to Orlando. The data speaks for itself on it being one of the worst places to drive, but I genuinely have never seen such a sh!t show of drivers than I do each day in Centra Florida. And it makes sense with drivers from all over the world trying to navigate a highway system that is poorly designed.

Central Florida drivers are suicidal in a way that most drivers around the country aren't.

Nonsense.

Not only is Evel Knievel not paying enough attention but the tow truck driver just stopped over in the passing lane and hoped for the best.

Doesn't look like the tow truck has any flashing lights or anything. And 29 cop cars on the one side of the road but none over where the tow truck is sitting. Lots of dumbness happening there.
