Disney imposing outright ban on selfie sticks

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Disney is banning selfie-sticks from its theme parks, citing safety concerns, a company spokeswoman said Friday morning. Under a new policy, which takes effect Tuesday, the poles won’t make it past the bag check at any Walt Disney World theme park. The ban also rolls out in California, Paris and Hong Kong next week.

And there was much rejoicing.

I fully support this. However, being a former main entrance CM at Epcot, the sense of guest entitlement and overall guest attitude over being turned away at bag check could get ugly. I hope Disney stands their ground with this and doesn't make every other guest an "exception" like they have with other situations.

Thank you, Disney.

I never got hurt by a selfie stick. The limousine strollers on the other hand.... Fix the REAL problem.

I would totally buy a selfie stick, but only to knock other selfie sticks out of people's hands.

My hearing is a bit fuzzy from this head cold:

Did you say they're banning selfie sticks or selfish dicks?

;~)

Meh, works the same either way...carry on. Happy Friday everyone!

Obviously Disney has good reason, but I'm surprised they went to this length with a full out ban.

Managing the sheer number of selfie sticks that get gate checked alone has to be a major operational challenge. When I was at WDW this past spring, it felt like there were hundreds (or more) of selfie sticks about and around. Perhaps WDW is banking on educating guests to keep their sticks at home, in their car, hotel room etc. to keep the number that make it to the bag check to a manageable number.

Being in the industry, I can't see the Disney ops folks eager to undertake this initiative. Clearly there are going to be some explosive guest service situations, particularly from guests caught in the parks with their stick and are told that they have to walk to the front gate and check it.

I don't think it will be that big of a deal. They're already checking bags. I'm surprised at how often they turn people away with glass objects (including souvenir glasses and mugs bought at other parks).
