Disney gets its way for Florida bullet train

A proposed bullet train across Central Florida will run directly to the Walt Disney World resort from Orlando International Airport, bypassing the taxpayer-funded Orange County Convention Center en route to Tampa, a state panel voted Monday. The Florida High Speed Rail Authority's 7-1 decision ended a debate that has simmered since voters, in a constitutional amendment passed in 2000, mandated the construction of a bullet train network spanning the state. Disney previously refused to allow a stop on their property if the train stopped near other attractions or the convention center.

Let's not forget a simple truth. The whole idea for a bullet train is to speed up mass transportation. The more stops you have on the bullet train, the longer it will take and the less likely people are going to want to ride it.

You could always run express trains that skip stops. Heck, throw mouse ears on the thing and send it straight there. But allow the users to take trains to the convention center too.

The problem with that is, how many people do you think will go straight from the airport to the convention center? When I go to a conference the first place I go is my hotel to check in. When I leave the conference I go back to my hotel before going to the aiport.

The convention center doesn't need a direct link to the airport. What Orlando SHOULD consider is a light rail system above International Drive that would connect hotels with the Convention Center, Sea World, Wet 'N Wild and Belz. The real problem with International Drive is the amount of cars on basically a 4 lane road. The bullet train should not go anywhere near that miss.*** This post was edited by wahoo skipper 10/30/2003 10:12:23 AM ***
