Disney Genie service deeply unpopular among fans before it has launched

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

From the article:

Disney guests clearly aren’t happy about the change — Disney’s announcement video for the Genie service has a telling 12,000 dislikes compared to 956 likes. The outrage mainly comes from the fact that the FastPass and FastPass Plus, Disney’s line-skipping services that will be imminently phased out, were free to use. Although you didn’t have much control over the specifics of your ride schedule, it still helped you avoid standing in a queue for hours, free of charge.

The "hard core fan" group also splits into two categories.

The first category is: ZOMG!!! Vacation ruined! The second category is: Huh, that's more expensive than it used to be. Bummer.

You hear a lot from the first category because rage amplification yadda yadda. .You don't hear much from the second category, because they are going about their business and getting ready to go on vacation.

I agree that's how it always has been. The difference with this one is the fact that offerings are still less than they were pre-COVID and park reservations and Genie+ have frustrated some folks that ordinarily roll with whatever.

The less perception is a strange one. I know there are certain shows not back, and losing Nemo is sad, but it's not like it was even in April.

I will say that I haven't seen research cast on the midways, and I haven't been sent surveys, which seemed pretty regularly in 2019. It would be pretty unusual for them to not have their finger on the pulse, but all of the fingering seems directed toward them.

Hahahahaha... that's great. If you really believe that you're getting crap, they're happy to replace it or give you your money back, but you have to talk to a human instead of running off to Twitter.

Gotta keep that like count high.

This one is fantastic. They finally ditched that terrible music used at Epcot in Future World, and of course they say it's an unnecessary change and tragic.

I will say WRT to Genie+ specifically, having Frozen, Everest, Space, and Runaway Railway on G+ instead of Individual Lightning Lane made me feel a million times better about the whole program. It gave G+ a lot more value at Epcot and AK where there really aren't that many G+ attractions and helped alleviate the demand at DHS where things were booking up too fast. Having 1 attraction per park on Individual Lightning Lane just made sense.

It's kind of a bummer that those attractions (save Everest which is on rehab now) reverted to Individual.

I'm fairly confident they make a good effort to make you aware of the traffic if you are staying on property and if you are not there are large signs all over for weeks leading up to this weekend talking about road closures and long delays.

I worked Epcot Main Entrance and was a part of the marathon crew (and Princess half and Wine & Dine) for many years. And before that when I worked Kilimanjaro Safaris on the morning of the full marathon we had to get the trucks on the ridepath at a different entry point. Old Bob allowed the same traffic cluster.

This tweet is hilarious.

I love that, pandemic aside, the company is putting record capital into the resort for the last decade, and yet the accusations of neglect and cost cutting never end.

I’m not sure what the Disney nerds hate more: change or Bob Chapek? They’re giddy when they think they can combine the two.

Don't get me wrong, there have been enough changes in the past few years that have me ready to push pause on being an Annual Passholder for the first time in a while. But those changes are more along the lines of me, the childless local that just wants to pop into the parks after work or on my day off to ride my favorites and occasionally grab something eat, not being the target audience for the overall Walt Disney World experience. My fandom with Disney rests solely with the theme parks. I have no interest or loyalty to the movies, the merch, or the overall brand. I just like many of the rides.

All they have done is made it more expensive and more difficult to do what I like to do. Which is essentially come and go once in a while and take up space on the rides without really offering anything else desirable as a customer. If I was a theme park operator, I wouldn't want me to come and take up space either.

There really is a struggle in that sense for locals, because the third tier (SeaWorld/Busch Gardens) gives us a ton of incentive, but they operate so poorly by comparison and it's frustrating. Universal is somewhere in between, but my frustration there is the terrible hours most of the year. You just can't go on weeknights if you have a day job.

They want us Floridians...if we contribute to the bottom line. I priced out some options for this coming weekend. A three day resident ticket was $10 cheaper than buying two, one day tickets. So they are, in effect, dangling the carrot for me to stay on property longer. And I will. I've now decided to book the Caribbean Beach Resort (and I rarely stay on property) and stay that third day (since it is MLK weekend).

I will also say that the Skyliner is a game changer as well. The ease of access from the Caribbean (or Art of Animation/Pop) to DHS and Epcot has really convinced me to spend the extra money to stay on property. It is such a more relaxing experience (which I am sure I would recognize had I ever bitten the bullet to stay in one of the MK resorts). If they can figure out how to add the Skyliner to link AK via Coronado then it will be game on for that resort.

It would be nice if they could figure out the missing link as well...to get from the Epcot Skyliner station to the Epcot Monorail station without having to enter the park. Even if I had an AP that is a pretty good hike from the International Gate to the Monorail Station.

Skyliner would be better if their lightning guidelines weren't so strict. It doesn't run half the summer. My understanding is that the manufacturer says run it 50 mph wind and lightning, but they don't. The buses then get crazy busy.

If nostalgic Orlando theme park nerds had their way these parks would be the same as they were when they opened. There are people on Universal's Instagram whining about removing Shrek 4d. Come on man.

I will admit not loving that Epcot is becoming just another Disney IP park but what's done is done and I know it's going to be great... if they are ever finish it.
