Forty-five years ago, Roy Disney announced to the world his late brother's plan for EPCOT. Roy announced on Feb. 2, 1967 that Disney Productions planned to build a theme park and the world's first glass-domed city in Central Florida.

I really would have loved to have seen that project be what Walt described. Not counting the dome for the middle of the city, it was generally something that could have been built even in the 60's. It was all about the planning.

Too bad it could never happen...a city has residents. Residents have the right to vote on their representation. Can't have that in Disney's very own private government.
There is compelling evidence in "Married to the Mouse" that Walt knew the city was DOA for this reason before the EPCOT Project film was even made. But, it sure helped them sell their case to the Florida legislature....
I seem to recall reading somewhere, maybe in Wired, that smaller scale cities like this have been built overseas (probably in China), and they tend to prove out the concepts that this explores in terms of transportation and design.
I'd be totally up for living in a place like that. The suburb of Seattle that I lived in reminded me of this, only in a very micro scale. It didn't have transportation, aside from public buses to take you to the city, but it did have business and restaurants at the middle, and it was awesome to be within walking distance of it.
The wrinkle that might help us out is that a growing segment of the workforce will be able to work remotely. I'm doing it now, and it's kind of liberating, if a little lonely at times.
