Disney announces massive renovation project for Epcot, Tron roller coaster for Magic Kingdom

A major new ride — themed to “Guardians of the Galaxy,” the hit Marvel movie series — is planned for Epcot’s front section, where a simulator attraction, Mission: Space, will be updated and expanded. A ride based on the Pixar film “Ratatouille” will be added to the park’s World Showcase area. Epcot will also serve as stop for a new gondola system called Disney Skyliner connecting various hotels and parks. Bob Chapek also announced more than $1 billion worth of projects unrelated to Epcot. A version of the “Tron”-inspired roller coaster that has been a runaway hit at Shanghai Disneyland is coming to the Magic Kingdom at Disney World.

I'm pretty claustrophobic and while the seating in Mission Space is pretty tight, I've ridden it several times with fairly minimal struggles. The screen is right in your face, but there is plenty of legroom and there is a fan that blows on your face so it isn't too bad. Plus I usually have a beer or two in me so that helps (it is Epcot after all). But aside from all that, the ride in general kinda stinks and is pretty much a dud. As someone said earlier, it's like an outdated video game.

The original concept of simulating a shuttle launch and traveling in space was pretty cool and I was real excited when it first opened. But it was just too much for the masses to handle and even the more intense side has been petered back to the point where the thrill of launching in a rocket is pretty much gone and has been lost.

It's one of those attractions that I take a spin on every few trips to WDW and after I get off, I'm good for a while.

For me and the folks I hang with in Orlando, it's "we've got to ride Soarin!" and "well, we have time, maybe Mission Space?"

Really cool that Magic Kingdom is getting a tron-coaster.

I like the way you ride in a motorbikecoaster, it has something different / special. The whole showbuilding and the effects on the ride in Shanghai ( based on the videos I have seen) looks amazing.

The only thing I am wondering... I tought that the tronmovies where not too big of a succes? If Disney builds rides based on that isn't then quickly outdated?

Perhaps a good idea for a next Disney themepark boosterbike ride... Star Wars Speederbike in the woods of Endor

I think that, if the ride is a fun experience, the IP can be unfamiliar. See Tower of Terror. And Disney has shown with the version at DCA that they're willing to re theme something when they're ready.

The Avatar movie has been pretty much forgotten by most people, and the new World of Pandora land is immensely popular. Also, like someone said before, Splash Mountain is themed to Song of the South, and you can't even buy or rent that movie.

An appealing setting and/or group of characters is a big part of the popularity of a theme park attraction. I am finding lately that the "synergy" between the IP, and an attraction themed to it, is not as important as once thought.

We were at Epcot yesterday and Mission: Space soft opened. Gina Torres has replaced Lt. Dan in the pre-show and narration. Green (less intense) has switched to an orbit around the Earth pointing out landmarks along the way with a runway landing in a thunderstorm in Florida. So it's basically Soarin' Really High Over Earth. I didn't recognize any noticeable changes to Orange other than the narration. It's a fun ride, but I've never waited longer than 5 minutes for it and probably wouldn't wait much longer than that.

We had a last ride on Ellen's and I'm amazed they were still running something that outdated. The middle car in the theater wasn't running so it made for a weirdly awkward wait in the big dino scene for the last car.
