Disney announces 1920's theme for California Adventure rehab

Disney's California Adventure is poised for a $1-billion makeover that's designed to give the troubled theme park the main thing it lacks -- an emotional connection to keep people coming back. The sweeping overhaul will transport visitors to the California of the 1920s, when Walt Disney first arrived in Hollywood.

Ah, but it does make sense. Even though the DCA gate numbers themselves are not where they should be, the average VPG has gone up. The good news: that brings more money to the resort as a whole. The bad news: it's starting to put a lot of additional stress on Disneyland, because those VPG numbers are biased toward the more established park.

In some way, you can view the current extension as a way to help pull more guests away from DL, which has set records over the last three years even with DCA next door, but can't grow very much itself.

I've always wondered how much the DCA gate is affected by the way Disney counts. All the people who go to DL in the morning, and hop over to DCA are DL admissions; they are not split. On most days, though, DCA opens a couple hours later, and nearly all mutli-day tickets are hoppers.
