Discovery Channel Specials

I think that the specials on the Discovery Channel were pretty good. Especially the SFMM one. That had a lot of interseting things and greta new shots of their rides. No recycled ones. Or at least I tihnk so. The extreme rides special was good too, too bad it is outdtaed. I guess it was as updated as you can go for a TV show. I mean outdated as in no MF and SOB just a bit. But it was still great. The Top Ten Coasters Show I didn't really enjoy though. I did like the top ten coasters but the whole show was just wrong. I likes a lot the fact that on certain rides the ones that were smaller went faster. And that announcer pretty much said that every sngle coaster was better then the others and every single one was the fastest. That is just my two cents.
My buddy was on the Extreme Rides 2000 they filmed him and his girlfriend Janic for Volocano last year. He was also on one a few years ago riding Alpengeist. As a matter of fact he's going to BGW tomorrow to film on Alpengeist again. Rerides all day in the front seat what could be better!

I agree with yer assesment, Craig. The top 10 show is at least 1 year old, maybe more.

I loved the SFMM one *sniff* my home park. Makes me want to go back, gonna have to plan a day here soon. And, to all of you Easterners, kinda makes you want to make that reservation for a trip out West?? It does get hot out here, but it's a dry heat!

Gotta ride 'em all! *** This post was edited by Soggy on 5/31/2000. ***
The shows were good. My only beef was that I thought the coverage of The Beast on the Top Ten program was disappointing at best... It hardly did the ride justice.
The SFMM one was the best because it was a new show and they showed a lot of Goliath (a coaster that doesn't get a lot of recognition for being the tallest, fastest continuous circuit coaster b4 MF opened). I liked how they showed that whole ride, like on Viper and Riddler's Revenge. I'd like to know how the ride goes exactly because I like to try to build them on RCT. Even though I live only three miles away from SFMM, there big coasters never get old, except for Superman: The Escape. They should have shown more shots of the coasters, including Ninja, Psyclone, Gold Rusher, Revolution, Batman, Colossus, and Flashback (even though Flashback sucks.) I also liked Extreme Rides 2000 because they showed most new rides, even a little of MF. They should have showed Marineworld's Medusa because of the new invesion, the Sea Serpent. I didn't really like the Top 10 show because the top rides are weak. Especially that stupid Thunderbolt ride at Kennywood. It should have been like number 12 or higher. Here's my Top 10.

1.) Medusa (Six Flags Marineworld)
2.) Millennium Force (CP) Yes, I went on it 2 weeks ago.
3.) Goliath (SFMM)
4.) Riddler's Revenge (SFMM)
5.) Raptor (CP)
6.) Alpengeist (BGW)
7.) Mantis (CP)
8.) The Beast (PKI)
9.) Desperado (Stateline, Nevada)
10.) Canyon Blaster (Las Vegas)
I liked both the Scream Park and the Extreme Rides 2000 special. My problem with the Top 10 coasters is that they don't consider any new coasters like Alpengiest,Medusa,Hulk,Ghost Rider, Superman ect. I do think all the rides in the Top 10 are good coasters, but some just don't belong in the top 10. I also didn't like Thunderbolt being #1.
I enjoyed scream park. They oppurtunity to see all the work behind the scenes was nice. I know that top ten show was on last year. I don't know about years before that. We recorded it last year. My 3 year old loves to watch the big coasters.
Chris, I think you need to give some of those others coasters credit. I don't think you have been to enough parks to experience a totally fair top ten list. Riddler's Revenge and Medusa I'm sure are great coasters, but I think the classics should be thre too. I still like yoour list better than their's!!!!

Finally watched Scream Machines last night on tape. Good show for the most part. If memory serves correctly, you'll see one from Hershey and at some point one on Spaland. You didn't hear it from me.

Yes, the Top Ten Show was at least one year old, possibly two.(Even on the NEW specials there is usually 6 months to a year of post production before they air) But it was a good teaser (for anyone who doesn't see much about coasters or know them outside their area) and for the susequent 2 hours. Scream Parks was fun, especially the behind the scenes workings of SFMM, but the Extreme Rides 2000 was a great addition to my growing coaster video collection. To see OBLIVION, AIR THRUST 2000,STEALTH, SPIDERMAN, and all the other new innovations (new as of last year) was great. But we'll have to wait till NEXT summer to see SOB and MF footage!
As for the Top Ten list, especially from 2 years ago, I'd say ANY claims publicly stated would be highly disputed. With the WIDE range of new coasters, styles and invention,(plus personal preferences and limited to one's personal experiences only) I would be curious to see if ANY two Top Ten lists ever matched!

"You have to scale a lot of lift hills to coast easily..."
yup the Top Ten is definitely a replayed show.....I remember watching the same exact show last year possibly even the year b-4. Half of the coasters on there don't belong on there....thunderbolt, steel phantom, megafobia, nemises, those rides could easily be beaten out by any new coaster....the newest coaster on that show was Steel Force, although it is a great ride...it shows that the show was outdated

I agree, I had this exact show on tape. If they wanted to show an old show, they should have showed the one were the non-coaster-riding BGW worker-girl got on Alpengeist. She screamed so long and loud. I know it shouldnt have been, but it was the funniest thing I had seen in a long time. And, from what I've heard, if the poll had been taken after last year, we would have seen Shivering Timbers or Ghostrider break into the top five woodies....
Has anyone seen the advertisment in Newsweek magazine for the MSNBC show about the dangers of coasters? It says Sunday at 9. Is that this Sunday or was it last Sunday. This things are really ticking me off
It should be this Sunday.
