Dinn, Summers Coasters..

Exactly my view on the ride^.

------------------
Is it just me or am I defending SOB in three different threads?

In response to the original question about Mean Streak....yes it was good. I loved it in 91 when it opened, and thought it was awesome the second and third years.....after that though :(

I've heard that pretty much all Summems and Dinn coasters (and rattler) were great when new....but IMO Thunder Run is the only one still ridable (but man is it great!)

Isnt the Beast techically a Summers and Dinn, if so then that one still is rideable (and my favorite wooden coaster)

------------------
I dont care what anyone says Magnum is better then MF, which is better then TTD!

Beast was designed IN House starting off as a recreation of the Cincy Coney Island Shooting Star. AL Collins is credited with it's design. Charlie Dinn was the head of PKI construction at the time.

Mean Streak was a great ride when it first debuted but since the brakes were added on the first drop it's just so-so. But given the right conditions, it can still give a good ride, especially at night.

I think Predator has a great layout but unfortunately the ride needs some track work and new rolling stock.

You want one of the worst Summers/Dinn creations? Raging Wolf Bobs at SFWoA. Forget retracking it, just bulldoze it.

Wolf Bobs re-tracking on the 2nd half really helped. It flew like none other. Sure, it was just more or less a little speed coaster with no air-time, but it felt goooood.

Now, if they can do that for the more intense first-half, the coaster would be bliss. It wouldn't be a favorite at the park, but it'd be a lot more popular (although a track color change would help).

Oh my. Raging Wolf Bobs. I forgot about that one. I have not been on that one since 1992. I am partial to woodies, but this one is not one of my favorites.

At least, I ride Mean Streak everytime I visit CP. I also find MS rougher than SOB.

One interesting thing I noticed: PKI has two wooden coasters that were designed, at least originally, based on Shooting Star in Coney Island. However, the Beast and the Racers cannot be more different from each other.

Well neither coaster is close to shooting star. The helix on Beast is semi simular (Tunneled helix) Racer has the airtime hills that are somewhat lamer.

Al Collins used John Allens forumulas on The Beast. Originally KECO aproched John Allen to design it but Mr Allen at that time was either too sick or just didn't want to do it anymore and sold KECO all his wood coaster formulas.

Also on Beast was consultation by William Cobb and some other designers of the time. If you look at linneage of Wood coaster designers, They are almost all connected.

www.thegravitygroup.com has a listing of who and what coasters each of thier designers worked on and with.

Chuck, who says it goes all the way back to Lemarcus Thompson Who hired John Miller, Who trained Herb Schmeck and so on and So on.

In my opinon Raging Wolf Bobs is to wooden coasters as T2 is to steel, it is a waste of space that beats the living s*^t out of you. Tear it down! Put up a mad mouse instead!

T2? Terminator 2? You calling that steel robot (Robert Patrick) a waste of space? He was a good shape shifter... but I wouldn't call it a complete waste!

I was waiting *patiently* for Brain to pop in and mention GC....I was gonna do it, but thought it'd be best coming straight from the Gamecock's mouth....;)

GC and TR are the *two* rideable, re-rideable S-D coasters.....at least until I get to TX....;)

TAER IT DOWN!!111!!!!

I live in between a paradox really, I have 3 woodies closeby(so sad), one is Summers-Dinn(Colossus), CCI(Ghostrider) and smelly poo(Psyclone). They all have their ups and downs, some more downs than others, but they all have something in commone, rough, raging and if you find the right way to ride the things, they're fun, yes even Psyclone. I always give Psyclone a chance when I go to The Magical Hill and sometimes I get really good rides. It's all about trying out that whole luck of the draw thing.
On a side note: usually I get my best rides on Psyclone when the humidity is high or it rained previously.

Everything is upside-down when you're stuck in the sky.

I hope that they have ups and downs! : )

Colossus is a Summers-Dinn? Interesting, I didn't know that, not sure if I believe it either.

Colossus was built by National Amusement Devices (NAD)...Psyclone is a Summers-Dinn creation

(Why can't you folks ever just NAME your favorite coasters?)

Antuan, I have bad news for you...Mighty Canadian Minebuster doesn't look anything like those photos on RCDB anymore. They took those two short hills and made one big boring hill out of them. They took a great coaster and massacred it. :(

Because I wanted people to marvel at its splendor :)

When was the mod. done? The last time I rode it was in 97, and it did kixed azz!!

It was still Taft back then. KECO didn't form until 1984.

Not sure how much of this is true, but I have heard that John Allen played a very small part in the design of the Beast. I thought I remember hearing that he served as a consultant to the project.
