From experience, I can say that gates are way better than chains. Imagine asking ten rows of people to pull up the chains every cylce, or doing it yourself. It Sucks. Even if they do slow loading times, it is less of a headache for the ride op, who already has enough going on.
A lot of people are saying it is like prison, but from the ride ops view it is like herding cattle. The gates open and the bovine goes through.
When I grow up I'm going to Bovine University ;)

I *never* ran into a busy street after some stupid toy. I didn't even cross the side street that I lived on without looking both ways. so, again, I say that if the kid isn't smart enough to look for something coming or ask his/her parent to get the ball then they deserve what they get. and the parents should take a few lessons in watching their kids.
did I do stupid things when I was a kid? hell yes, but I never put myself in front of a large, fast moving object.

Most Disneyland rides still dont have gates. They rely on the employees to keep people back. The employees on Indy actually use thier body to block all three rows.
On the other hand, they also dont check restraints....hmmmm

I'm not sure, but I would venture a guess to the idea of the width of the train. DV's trains are much wider than V2's, but that really wouldn't make a difference.
Either way, you aren't going to be able to get over the gates unless you really want to. Although I must admit that I am impressed by CP and rides such as Raptor and Gemini, which do not have any gate system at all. Nice to know that they trust the general public.
