Developing Film From Park Trips

I was just curious if any film developers asked you about the parks you visited?

99% of the time when I get film developed I go to our local Wally Mart and get the one hour. Usually when I drop off the film the one lady who works there asks what parks these rolls are from. Heck they even know me by name and know I get singles and not double prints! Somtimes they ask me where the parks are and some typical questions like how big the park is,how many coasters.

-----------------

No, they never ask me any questions like that.

As far as I know the photo counter employees never even see the pictures,at least I hope not.

I dropped off 3 rolls of film at Target and when I went to pick them up the lady said to me, "Someone went to Six Flags." I was pretty surprised! So we talked about Six Flags and other theme parks and coasters for at least 30 minutes. It was pretty cool.

-----------------

Not really.....but that may have had to do with me yelling at them for getting them to me three days late and getting an awful lot knocked off the price.

Now I've gotta stroll in to my photo expert and get four or five of my B&W shots of IB blown up into wall art. Even Playette loves my work--and she thinks we're all crazy.

Well as a "Photo Center Specialist" at Wal*Mart, I ask about my pictures all the time/ :) No really I enjoy when people bring in vacation pictures from Florida (Disney, SeaWorld, Busch Gardens) and then there is the local parks (SFStL, WOF, Adventureland, SDC). I think it's fun. Also about the job - it pays the college bills :(

Ofoto.com... I'm now as digital as they go.

Film is dead. Long live film.

Oh yea, they know me at my Photo place as well. I think when you get 1 hout Photo it is a bit more personal and I *think* the 1 hour Photo people do see your Pictures, but I could be wrong.

It is nice because if they see something wrong or if they think the lighting is off they ask me about it when I come in and they also ask about the Parks (or Concerts, I get lots of Concert Pics developed as well.) It's Nice.

And nice pics Jeff! Being a Photography major I am really into checking out photos and those are some nice 1s.

What's the cheapest place to get decent quality large pics/small posters like that made from photos?
CoastaPlaya - I want something like that for our kitchen that is being remodeled! A huge blown up B&W picture from IB or CP...it would fit in well with what we are doing!

So much to touch on:

1. I've taken what seems like a gazillion rolls of film to many different labs and no one ever questioned my coaster / park photos.

2. Coasta Playa - I do the same thing with good pics of the kids at parks - 20 x 30's. Get tons of comments on them! I'm a long time ofoto customer, my 20 x 30 purchases probably keep them in sports cars & mansions.

3. Jeff, those are some of the first pics I've seen that have persuaded me to consider going full digital! It'd save a ton of scanning time too...

4. Raptor Pilot - not sure about the cheapest but, like most things in life, you get what you pay for. It may be worth considering quality over price.

Dorney Park visits in 2002: 13

Last summer I dropped off 6 rolls of film of Hersheypark-2 rolls, Dorney Park-1 roll, Knoebel's-1 roll, and SFGAdv-2 rolls. All of them except the 2 at SFGAdv were from Coaster Con. But the people didn't say anything to me.

I haven't gotten film developed in about two years. There is no benefits to color film photography over digital.

B&W on the other hand, I'll never use a digital camera to take B&W photos. No matter what you do in Photoshop, notihing beats film for it.

I develop all my own B&W photos in a purpose built darkroom in my home. And I found some really cheap B&W film in Vietnam two years ago (last time I used a film SLR), so I stocked up on it, and it's still going.

If all goes well business-wise (and thankfully, the webhosting business is at an all time high), I'll have a Canon, Nikon or depending on how well, even a Kodak, digital SLR.

So what if the best coaster in Australia is a second hand Arrow?

I disagree about there being no benefit to color film to a certain extent. I've always been able to get better resolution out of film, not to mention use an actual SLR with different lenses.

Then the Canon D60 came out. That was the turning point. Not only is it better than film, the image quality is much better as well. And, it's an actual SLR that uses all the same Canon glass I already had. One word of warning though, it ain't cheap!

Dude, that is rude if the photo-shop workers discuss your pics without your permission. That's your personal stuff there. They wouldn't say, "So, is that chick you're with in these photos your wife or what?"

-----------------
He let the contents of the bottle do the thinking; can't shake the devil's hand and say you're only kidding.

B&W just has a warmth and earthiness you just can't simulate by any other means.

Here's a link to Playette's favorites from my IB roll. If I screw this up again, I'm sure Jeff will delete it. Then I'll try again. Edit: No he won't...I think I got it this time. Really.

Be warned that this was a quick 300 DPI scan from a scanner--I wouldn't purchase them if I were you. Then again, you may feel small hairs and fibers give it a more timeless and antique feel....in which case, have at it.

Ouch. Got to disagree. Film will look better 99% of the time - until they make more cameras like that sweet D60 Jeff scored. The comparison between film and digital is very similar to the comparison between albums and CD's. Some people still swear that records sound better than CD's and to a degree there's merit in that claim. I feel the same about film vs digital - although that gap is almost non-existent as technology improves.

Of course this is comparing digital with simple 35mm cameras. You can still by medium or large format cameras like real pros use (4x5, 6x7) that will capture much better images than either 35mm or the very best digital camera will.

I guess the bottom line is what you plan on doing with your images. If you just want them on your PC or make small 4x6 prints then you can get away with cheap scans or simple digital cameras.

I still tend to prefer having prints over the convience of digital. Sure you can have prints made from digital but I find it simpler to just use film (for now at least, like I said the gap is closing fast) and scan the negatives I need in digital later.

As far as I have seen the D60 offers one of the highest resolutions of any digital camera at 6.3 megapixels (3072 x 2048) but for about half the price you could get a mid-range SLR and film scanner wihich would at the very least match those specs if not do better.

Give it a year or two and I'll probably be saying "Film is Dead" too. Until then film is only a little under the weather.

I agree, and I'll tell you from experience now that the D60 does beat the film + scanner combo. Last night I was scanning negatives from my honeymoon (better late than never), and I can tell you without reservation that the images I get from the D60 are much cleaner and have far less noise, even against ISO 100 film. I was outright shocked, because I remember when I got my negative scanner (a Nikon Coolscan III) being in awe about the clarity and detail in the scans. I had the same feeling now with the D60.

By the way, I shot a little fireworks the other night as well. Again shocked at the performance and lack of noise.

Also, I should mention that the only online printer I've used that I'm happy with yet is Ofoto.com. Their prints from JPG are outstanding. They should be... they're owned by Kodak.

On the flight back, there was an article about film (yeah, the old stuff) getting ruined by exposure to the X-rays at the airport scanners.....we've never had a problem with that, but I was wondering if that's happened to anyone here....and why I forgot to bring something better to read than the in-flight mag...lol.

The Advantix we have is a cheap alternative...allowing us good digital images and photos at a decent price for us "non-photographic" (non-photogenic?) types.....

Aww, what a cute cat Jeff.

Anyway, digitals are good, but cheapies are better for takeing photos on the ride just for a better peace of mind. I did get good on ride photos with a disposable. I will post them one of these days.

People have reported "softening" of film images caused by X-ray, but honestly the rolls I brought back from Hawaii were unharmed, and I think they use higher power X-rays there for some reason I don't recall.

Don't be fooled. My cats can be real bastards.
