Designing Roller Coasters

StandUpFan: I guess I'm mostly talking about EE/CS which is my field. I'm not too familiar with other fields. Up until recently, pretty much everyone was getting scooped up right out of school (at least from my school), so the name of the school you went to was very important. Most people I knew weren't staying with jobs long enough to get any useful experience and were getting them just based on their degrees. Of course, this was back in the hayday of dot-coms. Haven't really looked into it much since.

A rollercoaster? What's that?

I think the fact that most of those EE/CS that got in during the dot-com boom are now out of jobs says something about how important the name of the school you went to is ...

Let's go Pitt!! ;)

Who said they were out of jobs?

A rollercoaster? What's that?

I'm in EE but focusing on energy and systems stuff -- kinda the opposite end of the spectrum from computers and telecom and such. Until recently everyone was getting job offers before they graduated. I even know some people from small non-ABET schools who had jobs right out of school, and when that happens you know the market is GOOD.

A lot of new engineers and CS folks and the like lost their shirts when the dot-com boom caved in, but I don't know what they're doing now. I'm figuring they got jobs somewhere.

To add to what PittDesigner said earlier, from what I've seen it would be better to do very well at a lesser-known school than be middle of the pack at a well-known school. If you stand out from the crowd people then a lot more doors will be open for you, regardless of what school you went to.
