DeSantis appointees want to prohibit masks and vaccine requirements at Walt Disney World (in 2023)

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ appointees on Wednesday began trying to reshape Disney World’s governing body with proposals to eliminate a planning board and prohibit mask mandates and COVID-19 vaccine requirements.

Aside from being colossally stupid at this point, I imagine Disney would take it to the courts anyway to maintain autonomy. This is a settled issue, as the cruise lines were able to mandate whatever they wanted, and did so into 2022, despite the governor's insistence to the contrary.

Has someone tried turning Florida off and then on again?

Pretty sure turning Florida on would aim it directly toward North Africa or possibly even Europe.

Wasn't really considering retiring in Florida...but these last few years have sealed the deal. Of course, my #2 was Tennessee. I'm running out of options.

God help us all if this authoritarian demagogue becomes our president. He clearly doesn't believe in freedom or democracy. He's also clearly is using the bigoted prejudices of some people to gain support.

So apparently Mr. ThinSkin doesn't want anyone to see his travel records. Why does he want to hide his travels? Perhaps so when part of his state is two feet underwater and he is nowhere to be found (or on a book tour), no one will be able to see what he was doing during a disaster? And the folks in Florida that voted for him are okay with this? I just don't get it.

He would be lousy for sure, but, maybe he would cause the country to finally fight back in mass for positive change.

Currently things seem to be slowly eroding which may annoy people but they don’t push back because they just accept it as another minor inconvenience that eventually is accepted as perfectly normal. We need fast abrasive change so everyone goes nope and we have a huge pushback.

So maybe he would be the best presidential choice instead of the worst???

If the last unhinged wannabe dictator didn't bring us together against a common enemy, why would this one?

Yeah, my thought was "We tried that."

To be fair, I don't think we can declare our collective response a failure just yet. There have been some promising things lately, especially in my neck of the woods.

Republicans: "We are all about personal freedom. Well, except when it comes to what you read. Or what you watch. Or what you do with your own body, ah...well...when it comes to abortion or sexual identity...but not when it comes to masks or vaccines because then we DO want personal freedom."

"Oh, and we are all about a capitalist society. Well, except when it comes to businesses that make certain choices. Oh, and anything Disney touches. Oh, and we don't want businesses to be able to make decisions related to their employees when it comes to health, wellness, and certain types of training."

"Oh, and we are all about spreading the American values of freedom and democracy around the world. Well, except in Ukraine...and we may or may not support Israel this week."

"Oh, and America is #1! Well, except when it comes to our FBI, or our woke judicial system...except OUR judges are #1. Oh, and our election system is rigged...except when we win and then it was probably fine."

It's a hell of a platform.

Nothing really to add here, because politics as usual, but just wanted to say that every time this topic gets bumped, my mind instantly reads it as "Disappointees want to prohibit..."

Which is kind of accurate I guess.

I will say, to some extent, you have to feel for Disney. I mean, in some regards, their major locations of operation in the US are kind of at the extremes... Imagine trying to get Florida and California to come to a consensus...

(Of course, yes, I know other companies also have this situation as well...)

But aside from the fact that government retaliation is morally (and perhaps legally) wrong, Disney didn't actually do anything wrong themselves. It's entitled to voice an opinion, since Citizens United says companies are people. And if that opinion says treat all people with dignity and respect, that's hardly a crime against humanity.

Since all of this has been openly a retaliatory action, I wonder why Disney has not sued the state yet. It would certainly be a novel case, because I don't think a company has been harassed for political reasons, at this level at least.

I'm not even sure what DeSantis is trying to do here (obviously assuming it's some kind of posturing for a 2024 PotUS run). Is "owning woke libs" so important that it's worth antagonizing big business, constitutional freedom, and incidentally looking incompetent while doing so?

Since all of this has been openly a retaliatory action, I wonder why Disney has not sued the state yet.

I'm thinking Disney's lawyers are just making a nice big list of everything, and will use it when the time is right. Why cut off the flow early?

The "rent is too damn high" guy is more credible than this joker.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

Disney posted an explainer about what the district is and how it pays taxes. It's stuff that we all know, that Disney actually pays more overall in taxes than they would if there was no district. I'm not sure it convinces any Ron fans otherwise, as he's always spouting nonsense about fair shares and will of the voters.
