Day In Pictures forum is going away

After looking at traffic patterns for the site, I've decided to shut down the Day In Pictures forum. It just doesn't get a lot of action. Of course, you can still embed third-party hosted images in a regular trip report, if you'd like, and that's something we didn't have enabled back in the day.

Thanks to everyone who gave it a whirl the last few years!

I have often wondered why people don't embed photos into a trip report. Seems like a really great way to tell a story.

The Day in Pictures forum is confusing and doesn't work the same way the rest of the site works with respect to the site keeping track of what you have and have not seen. I enjoyed it, but it was a little frustrating to get around. Getting rid of it is probably for the best.

My problem with taking photos is that I have a pretty good camera, but it is bulky, so I am less likely to lug it around a park. I also have my iPod, but it only takes .7 megapixel photos (yes, point seven), so I sometimes feel that the lower quality isn't suitable for putting online.

I need to just get me a freekin iPhone already, but I hate to talk on the phone. lol

Um... Can I get my pictures back? Oh, that's right, I never sent any.

I enjoyed looking at most of the photos, but I have to say I'm not crushed that it's going away. I agree with Travis that it was, for some reason I never understood, hard to navigate. If someone left a comment on a shot, for instance, the icon couldn't take you directly to the comment, like it does a last post. So you'd have to scroll through and hope to find it. Even if you touched every photo, the icon always showed like it was new.

Oh well, no sense complaining about it now.

And Travis, if you'd just get that iPhone we could visit and text and stuff.

Get a Nokia 920 or 1020. It takes better photos. :)

My iPod can do almost anything an iPhone can do, MAC. I can chat or Facetime or whatever else.

I'd get a Nokia or whatever, but it wouldn't compliment my iMac very well. :p

Take the "h" off the end and you've got Kanye West.

What size images are best to embed? Does the forum code size them fine or should we shrink them ourselves?

The forum will reduce the width, but the browser still has to load the entire file, so I would say 600 wide is a good spot.
