Danger debated in New Jersey as park plans to announce new ride

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-NJ) joins Ed Markey (D-MA) with the unqualified statement that amusement rides are becoming "more dangerous." His statements come on the heels of a recent study that shows no correlation to between intense rides and brain injuries that didn't pre-exist. The rhetoric also comes before the pending announcement of a new B&M coaster at Six Flags Great Adventure.

Makes you wonder how many laws are based on absolute BS.

A lot of them. Are there not more important things that our representatives should be worrying about in our country.

There is a new twist in the Top-Hat. :)

It must be great to be a politician. You don't have to worry about the facts.
Let's see here, conflict in the Middle East, sniper on the loose, let's waste our time on something that's really not that important. What, dosen't Markey trust technology? Let's go back to the days of horse and buggy for transportation. Oh wait, something might scare the horse and it will tip over. Give it a rest Markey. (Note: I didn't mean any harm in bringing up two serious situations concerning this country. I'm just saying that there are a lot of more important things than an idiot trying to make a name for himself despite science and the facts against him.) *** This post was edited by tservo on 10/22/2002. ***
all I can say is that this can all be changed. mid terms are coming up. vote, people, vote. get people who will take care of us into office and get people like Markey who are just looking for attention out.

uh oh, sounds like someone has a case of the mondays.

SFGA, Indeed!!! Deeds people, not words: get out there on polling day and let Markey et al know exactly what you think of their invalid rhetoric. Here's an idea: why don't the maufacturers of the rides take it to the politicans and sue. Surely it is not legally permissible for them to declare something as dangerous when they have no real evdence to support their claim.

It's about time the pressure was put on Markey et al to defend their views, without recourse to

i) Spurious correlations, which do NOT indicate cause and effect

ii) Instances of injuries resulting from pre-existing conditions, which could just have easily been precipitated by numerous other activities.

iii) Injuries resulting from horseplay or the ride manufacturer's guidlines not being adhered to.

It's all about politics. Election Day is coming up soon. He's trying to get some votes.

Hey for once the media makes Markey & Co. look like complete idiots.

That's encouraging.

The thought that most people here would vote against Markey solely because of this issue bothers me to no end.

Ok, I'm done. :)

he certainly isn't getting enthusiasts' votes *** This post was edited by SFGAdv lover on 10/22/2002. ***

I think ed is a Stubbern jack A**

And I say again...

More people die in cars, planes, busses, walking down the street, etc. Is he trying to stop us from riding in cars and doing other safe stuff... No, he is trying to take out something that is fun and only kills a few people a year if that.

He needs to try to stop smoking. (sorry to all of you that smoke, I think it is wrong but I have nothing against anyone)

Feel the Strike opined: "Hey for once the media makes Markey & Co. look like complete idiots."

Now, it may be just me, but I'm not really sure the MEDIA did that, I think *Mr. Ed* makes HIMSELF look like an idiot without any help at all.....the media reports "just the facts"!

Here's what got me the other night at SFGA; the park was slammed with people. The dollar signs were rolling in my head because of how many people were there. Clearly, people want to get on these rides in mass quanities.

Markey is to roller coasters what the PMRC was to rock music 15 years ago! :-)

We have no Homeland Defense Bill or a defense authorization bill done yet but markey can prattle on about a non-existent problem. It shows some are more concerned about getting government more invovled in our everyday life then they are about the security of this country.
Hmm...perhaps the sniper is a coaster enthusiast...

I am really getting sick of this guy, he just doesn't stop. Unfortuneately, he seems to be slowly gathering followers. I'm 17, but I work with people who range in age from 30 to 60 who have told me "those coasters are going to hurt your brain." Too many people just blindly follow what they are told without being shown any facts.

Oh, and Helios, speaking of laws that are BS, did you know that in Ohio if there are 5 or more indians gathered on your front lawn, you are allowed to shoot them? Now that's dumb.
