Very few within the US can produce lager to the same caliber as the Germans... Kolsch in Cologne, Helles/Dunkel/Hefe within Munich and Rauchbier in Bamberg... Next level stuff.

There really aren't any macro breweries in Europe brewing at that level either. You have to get regional like you said to taste what's special about it. Too breweries here in Pittsburgh have a kolsch style ale (can't call it kolsch outside of Cologne) that are as good or better as anything I had in Cologne. They can't compete with the atmosphere though. :)

Next time anyone is visiting Kennywood and wants to have a bite and a good lager go to Golden Age in Homestead, and if you want one of the best NEIPAs in the country go to Brew Gentleman in Braddock. Both are a few minutes from Kennywood.

Yeah, I hung out in the Augustiner one evening back in the day and the beer was meh, but the atmosphere was out of this world. That had a lot to do with the fact that Bayern beat Valencia in the Champions League final, and we watched the shootout on this little TV they rolled out (with a looooooong extension cord) for folks to gather around.

The U-Bahn was literally rocking from one set of wheels to the other on the way back into the city.

I would join that site.

Heineken proper is also a SIGNIFICANTLY different (by different = better) when in Holland

YES! I tried explaining that to someone, and fresh Heineken is spectacular and not at all what we have in the states. As an aside, we had a ride programmer here that also worked on the automation of the brewing line for Heineken. As he was working someone asked him if he was thirsty. He said "Yeah, I'll have a Coke." They responded very matter of factly "We don't make Coke. We make Heineken."

Big agreement to both of these. I love IPAs but don't always want them, and what Golden Age is doing with European Lagers is great. Brew Gentleman has great beers but for some reason I've never been there which needs to change because General Braddock's is one of my absolute favorites.

Hi

eightdotthree:

Hofbrau, Augustiner, Schlenkerla, Brauerei Spezial, Ayinger, Andechs, Gaffel, Schneider, Paulaner... The list goes on. Fresh at the source, it's no contest. Germany is downright stacked if you enjoy those styles of beer.

They know what they are doing technically beyond most of what is going on in the US. As someone who has been brewing (primarily German styles) and therefor studying German brewing for many years, what they do is technically impressive. If you are more into IPA, Stout, whatever... You might not appreciate that small nuiance that German brewers achieve that make it so special. They make malt shine in ways that most US breweries wish they could achieve. Been all around the US to hundreds of breweries and it's rare to come across well made lager, seriously. We can do plenty of other styles really well, but lager (outside of the AAL's) is not exactly easy to find done to the same quality level as the Germans.

And Brew Gentleman is good... Typical NE IPA stuff, much prefer Trillium back in their peak prior to the ferm/yeast changes and all that. I personally don't drink as much NE IPA as I used to, but you can't beat traveling around the NE area proper for it.

Augustiner's Lagerbier Hell (Vom Fass) at the source is unworldly... Not sure what you had, but Augustiner makes incredible lager...

Really can't wait for my Munich trip this fall... All this talk is making me thirsty.

I suspect it was one of their more pedestrian varieties.

FWIW today I saw a bud light handle on the beer stand in front of coney mall at KI. I didn't check to see if it was still in stock but saw no indication it wasn't.

I still find it very humorous that all the outrage is toward Bud Light in particular, but not AB Inbev. You know, who also run/operate some 200 brands, including such 'fan favorites' as Stella, Corona, Hoegaarden, Goose Island, Beck's, Natural Light, Michelob, Landshark, Labatt, Rolling Rock, Modelo, among others, including a handful of 'craft' breweries.

Let's make sure we boycott Bud Light, but still give our money the same company anyway.

Such a silly world we live in. People are something else.

People are often inconsistent and hypocritical. And its typically harder to see it in yourself than it is in others.

I was definitely wrong about Modelo, but this would be the point I was making. A large number of people boycotting Bud Light are unwittingly still giving money to the same company because, you know, outrage.

InBev's stock price is currently at 58.66. Its historical low was 38. It's only down 7.74 since April 3d when the boycott began. It's UP 7.38 from a year ago.

My prediction. They will redesign the can so the snowflakes aren't embarrassed to be seen holding one, launch a marketing campaign, sponsor some events, etc. Once NFL season is here people will be drinking Bud Light again.

Shades:
Was it Bud Light?

It was Leinenkugel (maybe Light) which most of us were anxious to try because (if I recall correctly) it was rather new to the area. No one had a problem with it because we drank a lot and I seem to remember we had the freedom to go back to the shelter for more. Which we did.
KI is one of my home parks and that Beast Buzz took the ho-hum out of it for me. I think I finally stopped riding a lot- it seemed every time I got in line for something I’d have to pee.
Good times!

This here. It is easy to boycott Bud Light right now because it isn't as heavily attached to MLB, MLS, or most any other summer sport. But as soon as every local grocery store has that giant beer can display right inside the door promoting the return of NFL season, you'll see sales go right back up. Especially when they reduce the price for the first few weeks of the season.

Both bigots and anti-bogots are boycotting Bud Light. This manufactured crisis is destroying a company who employs a lot of Americans.

It's a farce to distract us from real issues. One party wants to improve the lives of Americans, and the other party wants us to argue about "woke M&Ms", Critical Race Theory, and imaginary gas stove bans.

Last edited by LostKause,

I was at Cedar Point very briefly today. They are serving Bud Light. I didn't notice any on draft anywhere but they are definitely selling Bud Light mega cans at the bar stands along the Gemini midway.

eightdotthree's avatar

It’s on draft at multiple Kings Island locations as well.

It's an Disney too, but you know, they already have woke mind virus or something.

Not exactly timely, but The Atlantic chimes in.

The two main points: (1) Bud Light was an also-ran until Spuds MacKenzie entered the scene. (2) It was in decline long before the boycott, which accelerated an already-rolling freight train.
