Creepy Laughing Sal finds home in Santa Cruz

The Seaside Co. recently bought Laughing Sal at auction for $50,000, and plans to display her at the Beach Boardwalk amusement park this summer. The new owners, with help from digital technology, are even bringing back her original cackle, reportedly provided by a woman who was drunk when it was recorded.

I was just looking at Lord Gonchar's Kennywood picture collection and it seems they have one also. Something about providing happiness and laughter during the Great Depression. Interesting indeed.

This is great news, that thing has been sitting in the Cliff House in San Francisco for years and when they closed down the antique arcade no one knew what was going to happen to her. It will be good to see her in a park again, especialy one so similar to the park she was once in
Yes, Kennywood has Laughing Sal between the Olde Kennywood Railroad, and the Auto Race. She's still laughing:)

Technically, Kennywood's is called Laffin' Sal. She sounds better than ever now that she's entered the digital age this year. (That tape was getting pretty thin.)
Euclid Beach's Laughing Sal still makes the rounds also.

There is also a laughing sal at frankenmuth(sp) in michigan.

It was located in an arcade on the main strip.

Laffing Sal from SF's Playland @ the Beach is still missing her head, I've seen the "New" old head, That is the one she has now, & I have seen the Original too.

The Re-made one's neck is too thin, the head is a little too big her "Laugh lines" are different, There is a "Adams Apple" type fold is in her neck that wasn't there on the "Real" Head, & She is missing her light green hat (it's connected to her head & it would be Surgery to remove it). Her Hair is too long & stringy & the wrong Color Red. The Paint is too perfect to have been in The Beach air & Sun for 32+ Continuous years, Laughinh & Moving, The dress is weathered as are her hands but her head is 100% Perfect. Friday-Sunday the Park was running from 9:00Am till Midnight. (my Father worked for Whitney in the 40's) we always went to Playland we lived so close to it.*** This post was edited by Jeffery A 5/15/2004 12:29:44 AM ***
