Magnum is flat out rough. I rode in the last row of the first car last summer and had one of the roughest coaster rides of all time. In fact, I swore off ever riding that piece of crap again. It sits in the bottom 15 steel coasters on my list. It seems the majority of people who continue to "enjoy" Magnum are those who rode it when it first opened and have some kind of emotional attachment to it. That's fine, but things have changed. I think it's unfortunate that Vertigo didn't take Magnum out on the way down.

TTD was built
TTD was broke
TTD is alive
those who rode it when it first opened
As a counterexample, my first Magnum ride was in 2002. Loved it then, enjoy it more each time. Thankfully it's at CP, because when the kids are napping and everyone else is in line for something else, I can get a few quick trips along the beach. In almost any other park it would be *the* ride, with the line to prove it.

I prefer a powerful ride that tries to throw me off like an angry bull over one that caresses my buttocks as it gently floats me around like a child in the arms of his mother.
I originally wrote that quote in this thread back in May of 2003 regarding S:ROS vs the B&M hypers.
I think the "powerful" thing applies here too.
The line between terms like intense and rough can be quite blurry. One man's rough is another's intense. I prefer to call Magnum "powerful" - regardless of whether you interpret the ride as rough or intense, it's kicking you butt. It's a powerful ride.
It's up to the individual rider to determine whether or not that is a good thing.
Of course, it's *not* a modern coaster in most senses of the word. If I recall correctly, it was not simulated to nine decimal places before it was built. It may be one of the last "hand-designed" rides installed.

Magnum rides the same now as it did when it first opened. If you consider Magnum rough, than I guess I like rough rides. In my opinion though, it is not a rough ride at all. I can ride it twenty times in a row and I still find it thrilling and fun to ride.
Brian mentioned that Magnum was probably one of the last "hand-designed" rides out there, and was not engineered to the ninth decimal place. That is probably true, and is probably one of the reasons that it is an outstanding ride.
I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks, than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

That's a low blow dude.
Without Magnum, Phantom's Revenge and S:ROS (which I agree are great rides) might not exist. Fifteen years old or not, we still give more rides than Millennium Force and Dragster (and certainly the rides at other parks that you compare to). Yea, the ride has sentimental value, but even without its great location and its important place in history, it would still be way up there in a lot of people's minds. It's just flat out fun!
Some people don't want to feel like they're riding in their sofa when they get on a coaster. You don't feel like you're in a sofa when you're on Raven or Legend, but they are still two of the best wooden coasters in the world to me and many other people. The same goes for Magnum. Magnum hasn't changed since the day it opened. The perception of "rough" has changed due to many new rides. I'll take a ride like Magnum any day over many of them. It's just a matter of opinion.
Thanks to everyone who is showing Magnum some love. I'm happy to work the coaster that fired the first shot in the coaster wars and I can't wait to see some of you in line this summer. I promise we'll do the best we can to keep your wait short and your experience on our ride a positive one. I love seeing all the people who love the ride riding time after time every night. I think it's great that we're able to do that, rather than making you stand in a 30 minute line for no reason like many places might.

The only changes to Magnmum that I've noticed over the years (other than the addition of the lift auto-spiel, station auto-spiel, removal of effects in tunnel 3, and reprofile) is that last season it was running in insane mode.
Magnum and X will always be my two favorite steel coasters. I doubt anything will ever, ever change that.

Yeah, you're right - none of these newer computer-designed rides are any good.

Other hypercoasters would certainly exist with or without Magnum. It was really only a matter of time, and it's unfortunate that Arrow did it first and really showed their inferiority. Number of rides given says nothing about the quality of a ride. What if I claimed MF and Dragster are better because they have longer lines? The argument is basically the same. If you want to look at quality, look at the polls. In the accurate ones, Magnum is no longer one of the higher rated hypercoasters.
But then again, there's a clear bias with you. I have no emotional attachment (or detachment, for that matter) to the ride. I just happened to ride it once or twice and think it's a piece of junk.

No, Legend and Raven are not rough. They track extremely smoothly. They are the best maintained wooden coasters in the country. Magnum, on the other hand, is *rough.* It has nothing to do with the nature of the ride and has everything to do with the crappiness of Arrow's hardware and engineering. The trackwork is just plain rough.
Its still my favorite ride in the park (look at my signature) and I rode it for the first time in 1999.
Heres to the most airtime filled steel coaster on the planet, the one and only Magnum!
