Dick Kinzel said that everything is going on time and as planned, as far as construction of Steel Venom and #16, and he also said
“Further information on the capital programs at our other parks, including complete details on the major new thrill ride being added at Cedar Point, will be announced in the coming weeks."
So it's not coming quite as soon as we expected (when the top hat was finished), but it is coming within a few weeks.
-----------------
...it's probably nothing significant...
why does Cedar Fair keep referring to #16 as a 'thrill ride'? I've not seen anyone or anything refer to it as a coaster, this and their website included.
I haven't been looking too hard, mind you, but that's what I noticed.
If they're going for that coveted record, you'd think they'd trumpet this thing as a roller coaster. . . or, maybe it's just that 99% of the world isn't totally aware of the work that's going on there? . . . that doesn't explain their website, though.
-----------------
Maybe it isn't a coaster. Maybe it's a skyride, that just happens to have a 90º incline and decline.
Maybe all that track is just a cover for the real ride, which will be an out of control elevator falling from 400 feet.
I will agree with you though. For a while now I too have been wondering why it is continually referred to as a "thrill ride". Sure, a rollercoaster is a "thrill ride" but why not just call it like it is?
Jeff closed my thread about the exact same thing on GTTP.

Merry Christmas from Cedar Point.
Got the FunTimes newsletter and they threw in a little teaser about the new ride saying Santa gave us a present and to check it out on the webcams. Dang them.

99.99999% Percent of the population has no idea whats going on at CP.
To say thrill ride obviously keeps them in suspense.
I don't see what the big deal abotu it is. A coaster of this magnitude is a thrill ride afterall.

Well, like I mentioned, there's probably nothing significant about it at all.
But, still, when one of those 99.9999999999999% percent of people visit www.cedarpoint.com and view the webcams, there's no use denying it's a coaster - yet it's still labeled as a thrill ride.
I just thought it was interesting. If I had my way, the new for 2003 headliner should be a relocated Schwabinchen. I'd probably enjoy it more :p

But how many people are even aware of the webcams unless they are pointed in the way of them?
Most people may just think "oh cool a new ride" and never think a second thought about what it is. I think we overestimate how much non enthusiasts really think about this.

So I also thought it was curious that CP hasn't started calling it a coaster yet.
(Pause for a moment while I recognize in the grand scheme of life this whole debate is just ridiculous)
But, the "big" deal is that CP has previously made a point of calling S:TE a thrill ride, and *not* a coaster. So, I'm curious to see how they will ultimately market "#16". I suspect it will be a coaster when it's all done...hey...maybe that's the delay on the announcement...there's a big internal debate about just exactly *what* it is...? ;)

Amen to that!

I believe that to call it a coaster would be, in effect, to announce what it actually is--short of the name and stats.
CPLady: I can't believe you forgot this gem from the last poster who confused the CF quarterly conference call with a pending 2003 CP cap ex announcement (not to mention one of the very few 'Playa Letterman posts that didn't get nuked). Aren't you supposed to start a new thread in all caps followed by 14 exclamation points now?!?!?!??!

The CPlaya 100--6 days, 9 parks, 47 coasters, 2037 miles and a winner.....LoCoSuMo.
Does anyone smell that? I think.. it sort of smells like.. a New Years announcement.
(Ok, that was bad) IMO - People have hardley even heard of this kind of coaster type. I mean, the really really non-coaster enthusiast could look at this thing and think it's PowerTower2: Next Generation (?). It does sort of look like it.
Or maybe, it's an out-of-control 400 ft. yellow and red Intamin steel fountain! "..Guests walk up to this 400 ft. skyline thriller, safely behind a steel fence, and watch as unpredictable spouts of water drop from the top of this massive plumber's masterpiece and fall into the sparkling waters of Lake Eerie with jolting force! It's X-tReMe!"
I still say there is going to be a floorless cheese on a stick stand up there.
The track is to easily facilitate the guests movement to the restaurant. The Second station will be at the top built in the center of the floorless cheese on a stick stand.

Actually, 'playa, I DID remember that post. All I did was provide the link (just like above) and referenced the "announcement in a few weeks". I think my mistake was mentioning the January 6 date that SOMEONE ELSE posted in another thread and assumed that was where they picked that up. Or was it because my link was from cedar fair's news site and not Cedar Points? I got both news items, I just got the CF one first.
Who knows.
