Coney Island Parachute Jump to be repaired

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz disclosed that the New York City Economic Development Corp. is about to begin a $5 million restoration of the 262-foot tower, once part of Steeplechase Park. The Parachute Jump featured a 250-foot drop in a seat for two. Modeled after Army training equipment and built for the 1939 World's Fair, the tower was closed in 1968 amid safety concerns.

C-buf - Rye hasn't declined and I've heard nice stuff about the Jersey shore, Myrtle Beach, and the Florida panhandle. But from purely an experienced point of view I've only been to Rye, and that place is wonderful! Hopefully by the time I get to those other places they're still nice.

What have you gotten me into?

The latest news on the Parachute Jump is that they're NOT going to make it into a modern jump. They're studying "adaptive reuse." Check out the article on Preservation, posted yesterday:

They are now debating whether to open the ride or keep it as it is. I'm hoping they re-open it. It will be great for Coney Island and itll be a great step towards the rivitalization of Coney.
