Yup, Beast started out to be a copy of the shooting star. the only original idea from it left is the helix which in itself is severley modified from 360* to 540* and of course it's own lifthill.

The Shooting Star wasn't really that large of a coaster and if I remember correctly, only ran a single train. Capacity was a major factor in selecting a racer for KI. Given John Allen's feelings about curves, he might well have thrown out the helix anyway if they had followed the Shooting Star plans.
But I'm sure that the coaster could have been "fixed" to accomodate two-train operation.
