Concern for New Orleans, and fellow Buzzers

Jeez, I guess I have been totally oblivious whilst this disaster is happening. I am shamed. I just put on the weather channel and I am blown away. Having survived a hurricane myself in the Caribbean, I can say its not fun. You guys are in my thoughts!

Fate is the path of least resistance.

Yes Nashville is expected to have winds of 30 - 49 MPH and surges up to 60 MPH. Sure that's nothing compared to what NO is going to experience, but I hope all of us in the path stay safe through this thing. There could be a LOT of tornados that spin off too. I do love sitting out on my front porch during a good storm, but this may be a little too much even for me. Plus, my living room ceiling just decided to start leaking as of yesterday!

Keep lifting up the prayers for all facing the brunt of Katrina.

I survived a Japanese typhoon and the Togo flat ride of death!!!!!!
I live in houston Tx and it feels like nothing is happening in new orleans but i feel really bad about peoples houses and pets and mostly the people. their was times when hurricans came to houston but not that bad.

One interesting way that I've always thought of it (living in MD I don't really have to deal with hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.)

Yes, but we've many tropical storms that have done quite a number on the state, with the latest being Isabel in 2003 which sucked big time. I never want to spend that much time up close and personal with a sump pump again. Agnes, an older tropical depression was really bad too. Take a trip to Ellicott City in Howard County and check out the flood lines over by the train museum.

On top of that, don't forget that we're not immune from tornados. The College Park tornado, which actually went through the University of Maryland, left quite a bit of damage and killed two students. The tornado that tore through southern Maryland was really nasty too.

Then there are the occasional blizzards, flash floods...

So yeah, I would agree that we have it better, but it's not perfect.

^Jeff, I am keeping Lauren in my thoughts. I am sure she will be ok. :-)

Southern WV's biggest issue is flooding and occassional mudslides, thanks to the mountains, or should I say, mountaintop removal...:-(

Like Southern Ohio nowadays we have a "few" snow storms that doesn't amount to much. The past 4 or 5 winters have been VERY mild. We do get a lot of rain, though. But no hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanos, or earthquakes.

I am watching the news right now and it's a "direct hit".

The surfer dudes, by the way, apparently got a clue and did NOT go into the ocean.

You missed Ivan which spawned 40 tornados.

A day at the park is what you make it!

Living in NJ. I have dealt with a few hurricanes and one thing they say to us here is the worst happens North and East of the eye of the storm. But with a storm this powerful I would doubt that anyone will see a difference. I am keeping the whole middle of our country in my prayers due to hearing that this storm will not weaken until it is deep into the middle of the country and will be affecting large areas of our country for the next few days.

Watch the tram car please....
Wasn't doing much 'buzzing yesterday...even if Lauren's safe she's going to be very, very busy.

My prayers are for her too.

NOTE: Severe fecal impaction may render the above words highly debatable.

Hope Lauren (and everyone else) gets through this okay Jeff - good thoughts coming from here.

There are now reports that there has been a hole opened in the Superdome's roof so I guess it was not able to totally withstand the winds of this storm.

Keeping everyone in that area in our thoughts and prayers today...

Nawlins is located in the WORST possible location for any city susceptible to tropical storms, and I doubt there will be much of a city until mid-late '06...as I learned last year, belongings and buildings can be replaced.

9K people are in the Superdome, hopefully those holes in the roof (apparently two of them now) won't lead to bigger failures...

I'm sure the stadium can hold 9,000 people in the corridors around the actual event area itself. Stadiums and arenas are like small cities.

If they get a lot of flooding in the city, how do they even hope to get rid of the water when they're already in a bowl below sea level, and their pump system has failed? This could be a long recovery.
Big stadiums and gymnasiums are BAD NEWS in wind, with the big, unsupported beams that hold up the roof. This happened to a large gym in Ohio during the 1985 tornado outbreak in east ohio and western PA. It collapsed the roof easily.
The steel beams supporting the roof have held up so far. It seems that wind got into the ventilation system or the drainage system under the aluninum outer shell of the roof and ripped the shell off in 2 spots and that has let water leak in and onto the drop ceiling. Then the drop ceiling gave way in those 2 spots.

Okay, I'll say it. It looks like SFNO may actually get that water park after all.
My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone hit by the hurricane.

Especially to you Peabody and your fiancée, you are in my prayers.

First post and I wish all those in New Orleans the best!

Keep strong.
