re: jimmybob.....he shoots, he SCORES....thanks! You comin' to SRM, I'll buy ya a soda or somethin'....;)

arockam2, just a small cautionary note: Jeff doesn't HAVE to e-mail you to tell you that your *decision* to flaunt the rules was a poor choice. He already DID that when he wrote up the TOS. Since you've made your position perfectly clear, I wouldn't think it unjustified at all to simply drop the *banhammer*, sans explanation OR apology....

Thanks for the memories #23...there is NO "next Jordan"

Why exactly are you calling 'gator a kid last time I checked he was a bit older than you. Seriously if you are so much more intelligent than most people at this site why are you the one that appears to not know how to spell and is just over all acting like a jack-ass. If you think we have no life and are just obsessed with coasters, maybe you are the one that needs a life other than bashing people "you don't even know". If you aren't a coaster enthusiast leave. Save the embarresment of getting kick off the board, unless that's what you want.
Frankly I am suprised that Jeff hasn't kicked you off yet, he probably is just giving you a undeserved second chance. I suggest you take it or just leave so we(the paying customers) don't have to listen to you any more.

If you don't like the ride shut up and get out of line.

Aww, that's so nice of you to... Hey, wait a second --- cheapskate! ;)

To actually answer the question though...I don't know - all depends on certain things happening...

So do control systems have safeties like "If train leaves MCBR and doesn't show up at station in n amount of time, e-stop everything"?

That's one way to do it. A quicker way to do it is make sure the PLC "knows" about when each sensor should be tripped, and if a sensor is tripped out of sequence, assume that something has gone wrong and register an error.

It can even be as elaborate as, "Train entered block B, then entered block C, then left block C, but never left block B. Register a fault, alert the operator, and let the operator cleanly bring the trains back to the station." The system could even be made "smart" enough to recognize the difference between a detectable, correctable fault ("entered and left C without leaving B...logically B has to be clear; register fault, and allow an exception to get the ride clear.") and something truly weird ("train went from block C to block B?!"). I don't know if any ride controls have interactive fault handling ("I see a train in block B, but other sensors suggest that it isn't really there. Can I clear B and allow a train to advance from A?") but a PLC makes it possible to do that.

The real key is that PLCs can be set up to model the ride as it runs and make sure that what the ride is doing makes logical sense...and if it doesn't, shut the ride down. Relay logic has to make assumptions about what is happening.

Actually PLCs use "relay logic" they just do it in electronics. Doing it in electronics allows the number of "virtual" relays to be be much larger than it would be possible to do with physical relays. Virtual relays also break down much less often than physical relays.
