CoasterBuzz Podcast #66 posted

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Jeff and Pat review this week's news in the amusement industry.

  • Lake Compounce wants state to pay for road relocation. A classic case of finding the balance between a business being self-sustaining and looking at bigger picture economic impact.
  • Disney pulls the NIMBY card in Anaheim. Pat says it does go both ways.
  • Georgia wants to offer tax incentives to bringing new tourist stuff to the state. It worked for Kentucky.
  • Geauga Lake is not in a "death spiral." Can people over-react a little?
  • Is the smoke free in Ohio a business choice, or part of the new law?
  • Mall of America nails the Nickelodeon license. The locals miss the Peanuts, but we agree the new licensing is a win.
  • SeaWorld Orlando wants in to the water park action. It might be a market underserved in town.
  • Disney about to expand its hotel empire by thousands of rooms. Do you want to be a hotel on International Drive right now? There's your death spiral.

Maybe Geauga Lake's "death spiral" is like Conneaut's "We may not open again this year." It's worked for Conneaut so far... They open every year, and with increasing crowds. Perhaps this will get the Geauga locals to go to the park for "possibly the last time ever."
And now for Breakfast at the Gonch House!

Mrs Gonch: Do you want butter on your toast?

Gonch: I can see both sides. You know, butter would melt on my toast and make it kinda salty and buttery, but kinda soft. Dry toast is crunchy, but not so buttery tasting. I could argue either way.

Mrs. Gonch: *rolls eyes* How 'bout jelly?

Gonch: I could see both sides of that, too. On the one hand, jelly tastes like fruit and sugar and makes things a pretty color. On the other, buttered toast is tasty too, but not as colorful as jelly. On the other--

Mrs. Gonch: YOUR TOAST ONLY HAS TWO SIDES, PAT.

Gonch: What about the crusty part? Isn't that a side too? I could argue either way.

Mrs Gonch: I'll just drop your slice on the floor! Next?

LOL!

That's what you get when there's a bunch of crap that I don't really have an opinion on. :)

^ Flip-flopper... ;)

LOL, sweet...every argument DOES have two sides. Just like every meal should have (at least two) "sides".... :)

I have seen the beginning phases of construction for SWF's waterpark, as well as some of the "rough plans". Gonna be big, real big. Much like the hotels on I-Drive, the waterpark on I-Drive (Wet-n-Wild) may also be facing some tough times in the next few years...

Yes, but there's a difference between seeing both sides and simply changing your stance so it fits your agenda. (assuming a reference to the Q-bot thread)

^ LOL...."Only change your stance to fit the FACTS...not anyone's *agenda*." ;)
I know they're trying to recreate the Geauga Lake to it's proper niche, but when they remove big roller coasters from up front (where the average drive by can see) and replace them with cornhole (?!?!?!) games, I can see why the GP may be down on its future.

BTW, the Plain Dealer can't be worse than the Blade.

Good to hear Maverick's on schedule. I was one of the thousands who flocked to PB, and was just floored at those pictures.
Universal does have a waterpark... its Wet-n-Wild, they aquired it a few years ago.

Hooray! I've been 'shouted out' as those kids say!

I agree about Maverick being the sleeper of the season. I haven't been to the point since the year before Wicked Twister opened. Honestly, WT and TTD just didn't make me want to get up there instead of somewhere else. Maverick seems really exciting, though. It's a great layout. Probably the most excited I've been about a new ride at CP since Raptor. I've gotta get up there this year. (Only if Jeff makes it to Kennywood, though.)
