CoasterBuzz Podcast #194 posted

Jeff, Gonch, Mike and Carrie review this week's news in the amusement industry.

  • Carrie says recounts her experience at Phoenix Phall Phunfest at Knoebels. Accommodations are "challenging" around that area. Watch out for severed chicken heads.
  • Canobie Lake Park waiting on the traffic study to proceed with Euro Fighter.
  • Extreme World civil suit settled out of court, criminal trial of operator yet to come. We're still not comfortable with the precedent of someone doing a minimum wage job being charged with a crime.
  • Food & Wine Festival begins at Epcot. It's about cheese and wine, not drink around the world advance mode. Sidebar: box wine.
  • Checketts is out at S&S, no longer holding any stake and not consulting. What's with entrepreneurs that totally let go of something they started?
  • Cedar Fair sets out concrete financial goals for 2015, and reinstates the distribution. Does the entire sale fiasco seem even more ridiculous? This causes zero confidence for the executive team.
  • Another orca dies at SeaWorld Orlando, tired debate resumes about "free" versus captive animals.
  • Good clowns protest portrayal of evil clowns at Alton Towers. We all agree that it's probably a scam. And when did clowns become primarily evil? Sidebar: Insane Clown Posse are Evangelical Christians. And still not musicians. Also sidebar: Katy Perry and Elmo on Sesame Street.
  • Six Flags Discovery Kingdom announces a swing tower. They're the new drop tower.
  • Minor accident involving rollback on Pony Express at Knott's Berry Farm injures ten people. Expect the state to shut it down and investigate for two years.
  • Zippin Pippin rises in Green Bay. How many roller coasters did Elvis actually ever ride?
  • Mental illness advocates ask Cedar Point to shut down its asylum haunted attractions. Mike says it's the fault of Hollywood.
  • BooBuzz returns to Cedar Point on Friday, October 15.

I have reserved the Red Roof for 2 years running. I managed to get a King Size Bed for $54 a night this year. When I got there the road sign said $79. On a side note, friends of mine staying at the Days Inn said they didn't have hot water the whole weekend.

Danville is only about 25 minutes from the park. If you get to the park by 9 or so, you won't have to deal with any traffic. One might wonder why you'd get there that early. Well, there is a great breakfast to be had in the back of the park by Black Diamond. Then after that you can enjoy the festival before it gets too crowded. At 11 you can get your day pass and at noon the park opens. The line for passes can get pretty long at noon. I recommend getting it at 11.

At the end of the evening, everyone is welcome to go to the campground for the bonfire where they have free hot dogs and marshmallows. I recommend bringing your own sticks. They provide dowel rods but usually run out.

It might be out of the way for some people, but off of I-81, there is a Country Inn and Suites. It's about a 25 minute very leafy drive from the park.* It might be a bit pricey for people depending on their budget, and there's also absolutely nothing around it in the way of restaurants. Just putting it out there since it seems to be the same drive as coming from Danville. People could also check hotels in and around Bloomsburg, but I don't know about availability with the college there.

KGC, we'll have to remedy that for next year, even if it means you wear an outlandish costume. :) I assure you though, all it takes is meeting one person, and you'll end up being introduced to a whole bunch of people in almost no time.

Once you meet someone once, you wind up seeing them all over the place, too.

I swear, I didn't see half the people I knew were going to be there this year, though. I did get to meet Carrie and RGB, so I'm alright with that. :)

I'm alright with that too, although for some reason I pictured you as being shorter than you are.

It's not only people you know that you end up seeing, it's random strangers too. Like somebody wearing some wild t-shirt, or a goofy hat. You'll see them in almost every queue you get into, and pass them a half dozen times on the midways.

Ok, let's all make it a point to seek her out next year! I remember when I finally found Nitro Dave a few PPP's back after all of us missing him the previous year. I introduced him to everyone I knew at the park. I kept saying, "hey, I found Nitro Dave!!"

RGB, I'll be sure to wear a wild T-shirt and goofy hat next year. Or chicken head. ;)
