CoasterBuzz Podcast #145 posted

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Jeff and Pat review this week's news in the amusement industry.

  • CoasterBuzz Club will be going up in price soon after eight years at $20. You can still join or renew today at the old rate. Jeff explains why the increase is coming.
  • Trip reports can now be associated with parks, so your reports are more easily found by park. It comes as part of a minor forum upgrade.
  • The Six Flags bankruptcy story continues to unfold, and the company wants everyone to know that yes, we are open. This really sounds like a turn around point for the company.
  • PointBuzz posts Starlight Experience high definition video feature. Interesting stuff about the IT used to create a huge distributed theatrical lighting system.
  • There are a bunch of seasonal workers on standby to string up the ultimate Christmas lights at your house now.
  • The technology has come so far and is available at all levels. The boys are nostalgic about rock light shows, and when it wasn't cool to have light shows.
  • Paralyzed Marine's family makes a stink about free admission to Michigan's Adventure, comment storm ensues.
  • Is the Internet doomed to be a big pile of negativity, or is it really just a reflection of real life?
  • Speaking of technology, it's so easy to take for granted the amazing things we have today, especially if you were born in the 70's. We're old.
  • Lots of discounts and deals out there if you look around for them. USA Today had some examples.
  • Cedar Fair doesn't seem to have any strategy about how to market Cedar Point and Kings Island in the same state.
  • Mom blames park security for losing her kid.
  • Save the clock tower! The town square is back at Universal Hollywood.
  • Is Orlando on a blacklist for government meetings because it's too fun? Jeff thinks it's stupid that it and Vegas are negatively viewed for this reason.
  • Freestyle plugging away and doing the right things, but Gonch and Jeff don't understand why they had to happen instead of the old stuff. Could have been in addition to.
  • We appreciate your support of CoasterBuzz by joining the club. It's only $20 per year, and your membership helps support this podcast.
  • The Fall Affair at Holiday World promises to be a big deal. Register today!

So.. Lots of IT stuff to the Starlight Experience... Suddenly I have an idea for a VIP tour topic ;) Guaranteed one person to sign up.

Re: Light Shows.. I hear you guys.. When I was in college I produced Laser Light Shows for one of the largest Laser companies in the US. Even did shows at Darien Lake back then. Was the best job ever as it was total artistry involved. (didnt use DMX controls, but analogue pots and pangolin animation software on Amiga 2000s).

Best part was the fact we were using YAGs and Argon Lasers for outdoor shows, which while aligning made many-a-holes in my shirts, buildings across the way, etc.. God I miss that job, but pay wasnt the best and was always on the road.. Thanks for helping me reminisce. ::sigh::

I think lasers are cool, but they freak me out because of their potential to fry your rods and cones.

We had an unusually good time doing this show. We wandered a bit off topic, which drives some people crazy I'm sure, but we can't be single minded week after week. We're diverse like that.

Best ending in some time, too.

And that's what I like about the podcast...wondering just where the conversations will lead.

Hey, guys, don't worry about how old we're getting...I'm actually pushing 50, and remember my first digital watch (a TI from Radio Shack. Man, those red numbers were SO AWESOME! :) )

And no closing music? I almost missed the ending!

Yeah, I goofed up on the music. If you really miss it, you can redownload it, as I fixed it and put up the replacement last night. (Hint for those subscribing via iTunes: Delete it, then close CoasterBuzz Podcast list by "turning" the little arrow. Click the arrow while holding down alt/option, and it will offer you the "get" button" to download it again.)

Oooh. So the 'first edition' of podcast #145 is a collector's item. :)

I'd call it a mistake, but whatever floats your boat!

It's like when a baseball card gets misprinted and distributed before the mistake is caught and corrected. Those become quite collectible.

I'm sure Podcast #145 will one day become as valuable as a T206 Honus Wagner card. :)

I wasn't sure if that was a mistake or not. In some ways it made the ending even funnier as it came out of nowhere... like a bonus track on the podcast.

Yeah, at first I thought, "Hmm...I guess they didn't have any good outtakes" and just as I was about to select a new podcast to listen to the ending came on...

And these kinds of antics are exactly the reason it would be awesome to get the entire crew together for Fall Affair. Me, Mike, Gonch, Rob, Greg, then perhaps throw some other regulars here in there, start a camp fire, let the good times roll.

Yeah, I need to work the podcast back into my schedule. I'd have ESPECIALLY loved to rant a bit after your comment about a minivan full of teenagers with a handicap sticker at the mall (BIG pet peeve of mine these days since my girlfriend DOES need one; hell, if we're out together but she's staying in the car we refuse to use the hangtag anyway, since I'm perfectly able to walk wherever...)
