Coaster Elements and Abbreviation Terminology

joe.'s avatar
I was thinking about the different terms for the various elements and the various abbreviations that we use here, and I figured I'd start a thread on them to help some of our newer visitors.

What abbreviations can be confusing for you?  FOr a long time I would always double take looking @ SBNO (Standing But Not Operating) and OTSR (Over The Shoulder Restraint).

I know a lot of coaster elements, like Camelback and zero G roll.  but one I dont know...  Immelman.  What is an Immelman?

-----------------
Live on the edge and remember the Twist of Fate.

An Immelman is basically like a Dive Loop...but in reversed order.  Dive loops you curve into the loop, and then the second half of the loop is straight, like a regular vertical loop.

Immelmans, you invert straight into the loop, like a regular vertical loop, and the curve out of it.

If the shoe fits, find another one.

Yeah, SBNO got me freaked out for a while, but I figured out the abbreviation when it was used in the context of Drachen Fire and The Bat before it was torn down.

Sept. 11th 2001, Slayer released God Hates Us All. The song "Disciple" uncannily describes the events of that day, as well as the anthrax letters that followed.
--Slayer: Thrash band, or the next Nostradamus?

An Immelman is a fighter plane manouver named after a German WWI pilot. It involved pulling up on the stick to go straight up, doing a vertical aileron half-twist, and then pushing the nose over back to vertical flight. This allowed the pilot to gain altitude very quickly and the scan behind him for a pursuing enemy.

In coaster terminology, it's a half loop followed by a half twist to return to right-side-up.

the ones I don't like are SFGA, a little "vague", if you know what I mean.  I still have a little trouble with some of the elements' names, I blame it on the manufacturers for not establishing seom sort of common terminology...oh yeah, and the senility thing....;)

Oh! got another one!

What is a hammerhead? (in regards to coasters of course)

Live on the edge and remember the Twist of Fate.

It took me a while to figure out "ROTFLMAO"
what is LMAO?

LMAO- Laughing My a Off, ROTFLMAO- Rolling on the Floor Laughing My a off.

Hammerhead- Is a vekoma U shaped shuttle coaster in wich the vehicle was allowed to rotate 180 degrees at the apex of the two towers, aka(also Known as) Hammerhead Stall, FYI(for your information) it was only a prototype and the only one i know of was to be installed in orlando but i believe that is no more.

SFGA- is most commonly Great America just because it has been around longer than Great Adventure but usually I use the accronym's SFGAm and SFGAd just to insure I am getting my point across.

#1 Steel-Incredible Hulk
#1 Wood--Timber Wolf

As far as I know, the Hammerhead Stall prototype is going to Fantasy Island in the U.K. for '03 under the name of Stunt Flyer

A hammerhead is also an element on Beemers I think, although I can't say what it is. Pretty sure Nitro has one...anyone?

T-Wolf, thanks for clearing up the SFGA situation, now if we can get everyone to agree that PCW is in Canada, we'll be all set...;)

Florida needs an Intamin and/or CCI soon...Please!

The hammerhead on B&M speedcoasters is essentially an over banked turn. It looks pretty different from the Intamin versions, but it's pretty much the same thing.

You can see it in the foreground here:

I believe Silver Star also has one.

Slight clarification, the Hammerhead in the picture of Nitro is the one at the very bottom. It's sort of a big, overbanked turn, but flattened, so it's not "just" a big curve. The Intamin overbanked turn is a smooth turn that happens to tilt the coaster nearly upside down. (There are still debates if that counts as an inversion too.)

(Tough to explain, but let me try..) The train goes up an incline, which then makes a turn (in this case to the right) that is overbanked. After the initial turn, it straightens out a bit and declines (speeding the train along after the turn), then makes another sharp turn into the rest of the drop. The result is a rather impressive speed turn in the middle of the course.

Anyone that can maybe counter those points?

They have a whole terminology thing on CoasterNET. Look under "Ride Dictionary" Oh yeah, I got confused between BTW and BGW when I first started visiting this site.
