Coaster clothing and accessories? What and Why?

CPLady's avatar

I have only one coaster shirt, Shivering Timbers, that I got during Timbersfest this year, but I probably won't wear it much. For collecting, I tend to purchase pins.

I do have two articles of clothing that are necessities for any coaster riding day...a pair of men's cargo pants, and cargo shorts. Both have enough pockets that secure with buttons or velcro that I can carry all my necessities (ID, $$, fold up brush and cell phone) and know they are secured on any thrill ride.

Shirts depend on the weather. Tank tops for the hottest days, sleeveless shirts for generally warm days, and t-shirts if the temp is in the lower to mid 70's.

Being the S:UE fan that I am I have many Superman shirts. I usually wear a Superman shirt and jeans when visiting a Park.

I have tons of Disney shirts, but I don't think I've ever worn any of them (ask yourself when buying a large Pooh shirt, "Would I really wear this?"). I have a Busch Gardens hooded sweatshirt that I bought when it was 38 degrees in Tampa in 2001, and a yellow Universal fleece I bought when it was 50 degrees in Orlando this year. I also have a Fire Dragon hat, and an Apollo's Chariot t-shirt I bought my wife when she got soaked on Pompeii (wives don't think wet t-shirt jokes are funny).

The Busch hoodie and the Fire Dragon hat get lots of wear, especially on cold days at parks.

Doesn't it seem as though morons always have the caps lock on?

I have a few shirts, maps, brochures, postcards, keychain, and souvineer cups, but nothing much. The thing I'll NEVER be caught wearing in a park is those ugly denim jackets covered in patches that some enthusiasts seem to wear. Yuck.

My two favorite coasters are named Superman.
Nitro, Gemini, Laser, Ice, Thunder...The American Gladiators!

I have an MF, Talon, Magnum, Son of Beast, and Xcelerator shirt. I also have a shirt from Hersheypark that lists all the roller coasters from CoasterCon last year so Roller Soaker isn't included. And I have a CoasterCon XXIV shirt and a CoasterCon XXV shirt.

I own a pile of coaster shirts. Besides the fact that I just plain like them, they are great as conversation starters. Wear a coaster shirt from another park and it really helps to start a converstaiton during those long waits in line.

when i was in florida i went wild a bought too many shirts. shirts i dont even want to wear. ibought a kumba(awsome shirt)kraken(shirt is terrible),montu(sweet shirt), dueling dragons(shirt is also terrible), gwazi(not the best shirt), incredible hulk(dont like it) and a island of adventure shirt. its blue so its good for hot days.

i also own a raptor shirt(great shirt, has the loop in it), alpengeist shirt(good shirt but i havent rode it, so i cant wear it), and my fav shirt ever! superman ride of steel logo shirt, its white. awsome shirt. keeps me cool and i love the logo. the track on it rocks.

i plan on buying a phantoms revenge shirt when i go to kennywood. if they have a light coloured logo shirt. and maybe a millenium force shirt.

i also have a kraken and dueling dragon mugs. and a mantis beer glass. as well i own a deuling dragons hat. i wear the hat with my fav shirts when visiting new or far away parks. i want people to know im a coaster fan and i want people to talk to me about coasters

1.Fire Dragon 2.Ice Dragon 3.Raptor 4.Batman Knight Flight 5.Kraken

Lets see, I have these CP things.

Shirts- Magnum, Millennium Force, WT sweatshirt and Tee shirt. Hats- WT Cups- The MF cup that has two separate compartments, and its the clear one that they had at first before they made it those really ugly colors.

Kennywood

Shirts- Steel Phantom (the light blue one with the long speech on the back and on the front it says Steel Phantom 1991-2000) , and Phantoms Revenge. Cups- The green Phantoms Revenge one. Hats- Blue Kennywood bucket Hat.

PKI

Cups- The clear Beast/SOB cup. Misc.- Two sets of SOB stone coasters (the ones for your drinks).

I'm pretty new to coaster riding but my plan is to buy a coaster shirt from every park I visit. So far I have a Great Bear shirt from Hersheypark, a Top Gun shirt from Carowinds, and a long sleeved Rock N' RollerCoaster shirt (my first coaster) from MGM studios. I plan on wearing them to other parks, so white is definitely the way to go. Especially down here in the South, where the sun seems just a little hotter ;)
I like to wear my Raptor shirt to CP because the ride opps always make some sort of comment. The Raptor opps like it and tell me I have good taste and once on the Magnum someone shook their finger at me in shame. It was funny
Water bottles and shot glasses.

I have a Hulk green tie-dyed T-shirt, a JP black T-shirt, black IOA baseball cap, green Hulk baseball cap (my favorite), white Gwazi T-shirt, Superman baseball cap, and a black/silver Superman fishing hat, MF baseball cap.

I don't really wear these items unless I am at a park.

I have 3 shirts. Hypersonic S: ROS and Nitro. Also 1 Hypersonic visor. -----------------

My last count was 47 CP shirts-in that 12 are Raptor shirts. I have 2 Raptor hats, 2 CP hats, TONS of other CP stuff/shot glasses, pictures, calenders, buttons, salt and pepper shakers, glasses, mugs, tapes, books.........
The other park shirts I own:
Knotts, Belmont Park, Paramounts Great Am, SFMM, Busch Gardens, DisneyLand, DisneyWorld, SFOG, SFGrtAdv, Michigans Adv, Worlds of Fun, Playland, Adventureland, IOA, PKI, Dorney, Hershey, Kennywood, Knoebels
not to forget my GOCC shirt :)
The (non CP) coaster shirts I own:
Nitro, Goliath, Medusa, Talon, Montu, Cyclone, Superman, Alpengeist, Kumba, Montezooma's Revenge
I'm sure I'm forgetting some!!!
The question of "why" was also asked
I have NO clue why, most of the forementioned shirts I've never even worn yet! I seriousely own well over 40 coaster/park shot glasses. 2 years ago my company had a month long dress down for us. My teammates in my unit at that time placed a bet with me that I couldn't come to work every day for a month with a different CP shirt on. They LOST!!! :)

I keep it simple. White t-shirt with a logo, not necessarily a roller coaster, cargo shorts to keep my stuff in, shoes with ankle socks. Never wear chains or necklaces, and sandals are a no no, unless it is really hot and they stay on well. I also wear a millenium force baseball cap, to show that i'm hard core. Usually wear it backwards, unless the sun is really intense. And bring sunscreen, even if it's low spf. Bring only the required amount of money, and keep it in a fastened pocket.

I'd kill to have the money to finance a collection like that.

I am curious as to why most posters here DO NOT like to wear coaster clothing to parks? Why guys? WHYYYYYY?
Well first off, this coaster "geekdom" is ONLY among coaster "geeks" in the first place. Most of the so-called GP doesnt give a rat's ass about the fact that you have on a shirt from another park. Most would be more inclined to think that you just had friends/family that lived near the other park, not that your a "journeyman" and have made conquering coasters your life's quest. The "geekiness" only come out once you open your mouth.

In fact, I rarely get comments about my shirts other than "Where is that?" I'm mostly anti-social anyway so that's about the extent of the conversation. The shirt that got the most stares was the "Wanna Ride a Woodie?" Texas Cyclone shirt I have. But mostly it's because it's outrageous.

I just about get a shirt from every park I go to. Also in the collection:
SFA: "Worlds Greatest Coasters" (S:ROS, JJ, ROAR, TF, Wild One), "Batwing" (logo)
HW: "The Legend", "SRM 2001"
BGW: "LNM"
SFGAdv: "Viper" (even though I havent ridden it :))
SFWoA: "X-Flight" (logo)
SFGAm: "Raging Bull" (bull and track design)
KW: "Phantom's Revenge" (Phantom on front, scroll on back)
PKD: "Hypersonic" (long sleeved T), OL:FOF hat
DP: "Talon" hat (got it free)
CP: Compilation Shirt (Millie, Maggie, Mantis, Mean Streak, Raptor).
The list goes on, but I dont feel like thinking about it.

One thing I *will* note is that I have no luck with Cedar Fair merchandise. The seams on one sleeve of my CP shirt unravelled during the first washing and the some of the seams on my Talon hat holing in the brim unravelled as well (and I've only had the hat a month, and dont wear it often!). Either they need to stop having their stuff made in Bangladesh (switch to Taiwan :)) or they just reject my hardcore SF body ;)

I have a few, Conneaut Lake, Batman and Robin: The Chiller, Steel Phantom, and Leap-the-Dips. Conneaut Lake I won at Coaster Bash. Batman and Robin: The Chiller, was on sale, I got it for about $5. Last day of the Steel Phantom and the 100th birthday of Leap-The-Dips. The best way to make a day last forever.

Since Coasterman Mike is on his big trip today, I can vouch for him. He has I do believe, 20 - 25 shirts, and is coming home from the two week trip with quite a few more. But he does have a Phantom's Revenge hat that he got at an auction at Coaster Bash. The hat is a greenish color and has Phantom's Revenge embrodered on it. But on the back it has Idlewild Park embrodered. Really neat and I would not be lying if I said he paid $45 dollars for it. Neat collector's item.

Coaster M and M
Ride On!
Just did a major update on my site, http://www.geocities.com/coaster_m_and_m_18/index.html
*Can't we all just be nice?*

AMartin - here's why I don't wear coaster shirts... because eventually someone in line will ask you about it, and the conversation will go one of four ways:

1) They'll ask questions about the ride on your shirt, and you'll spout off a bunch of statistics and words they've never heard of, like "vertical loop," and they'll just stare at you.

2) They'll ask questions about the ride on your shirt, and you'll try to say something a non-coaster geek will understand ("Well, there is no drop, er, big hill, but it just shoots you out, and you go through four inver... , I mean, loops, and it used to have, like, shoulder bar-things, but now it has lap-things."), and you end up sounding like an idiot, and they'll just stare at you.

3) They'll try to tell a story about some ride that they rode, which will include outrageously inflated statistics, incorrect names and maybe even a crazy urban legend, and you'll have to bite your tongue to keep from correcting them.

4) The person who sees your shirt will be another coaster enthusiast, and he'll want to talk coasters with you, when all you really want to do is hang with your friends and talk about movies or whatever, not critiquing the rides.

SO - as you can see, all of the above are not desirable. :)
