Coaster Celbration Highlights 9/15/01

Associated parks:
None

A very long, but fun filled day.  Left home at 5 AM returned at 2 AM.  Too much for the time I have available to type, so just the highlights.

Breakfast:  The donuts I ate were not compatible with inversions.  Next year I will go for the bagels which people said were very good.

Morning ERT:  Medusa is just a magnicently crafted machine.  A great ride everywhere, but I think best in back.  Rolling Thunder had both sides running and racing, though the left side seemed to always win.  It was running better than it usually does dry, but not as well as it runs right after a rain storm.  Skipped GASM since it is a walk on anyway.  Runaway Train is a nice mine train with a beautiful turn over the water.

Lunch was considerably better than most of the meals that I have gotten as part of coaster get togethers.  The prizes given away were mostly small, but there were many, many of them which was nice.  Probably half of the people there won something.

Nitro Tour:  This was a great experience.  The tour included the controls, the train shed and a full walk around of the the ride course while running.  It was a great opportunity to get photos from locations that are normally inaccessible.

Night ERT:  In the morning Nitro had been running a little slow.  Not just my opinion, our tour guide confirmed that the speed sensors said so.  It was a chilly morning and the coaster had not been running all week.  By night it was up to speed and the ride was terrific.  Definately a world class huper.  Batman The Ride is always a nice ride, and since my travels don't usually take me to its clones I'm always happy to ride.  Skull Mountain was also better than I recalled.

Robin The Chiller:  This ride gets a special mention of its own.  Flight of Fear at PKD was improved greatly by removing its OTSRs.  Robin has not been just improved, it has been transformed.  I think that they have done more than just change the restraints.  FOF still has its jerky ride, but you are no longer injured by it.  The transformation to Robin seems to have also smoothed out the ride.  The ride was smooth, fast, and comfortable.  (I thought that I would never say that about Robin.)  In the dark it was also disorienting.  At times on the return trip I wasn't sure if the train was going up or down.  Thumbs up to Premier and SFGAdv for the greatest improvement to a coaster that I have ever experienced.

I would love to take a tour of Nitro. Seeing "behind the scenes" of coasters would be a great experience, for me anyway. I didn't know that SFGAdv was giving tours of Nitro. I knew that "they" give tours of Medusa.

Personal question: Where the donuts Krispy Kreme?

Just wondering...

did they have the lights on in Skull Mountain? i heard a rumor about this.
No the doughnuts weren't Krispy Kreme, unfortunately. And the lights were on for some Skull Mtn ERT. They strobed it for us right before the ERT. Pretty neat stuff.

The Nitro tour was *simply amazing*. I never thought I'd get to go back in that ride area. It was WELL worth the all night drive from Millennium Mania to get to SFGAd. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Way to go SFGAd, you totally changed my opinion in that park.

And I fell in LOVE with Medusa! For those who read a few of my previous posts, I wrote of my indifference to Medusa. Wow, how some 30 rides will change ones opinion. It was fantastic! Moved up to my #4 floorless, and now BKF is at the bottom. However, they are VERY close, and all the floorless coasters are top 15 for me.

Nice TR, glad you had such a great time!

"No listenin', you hear me?"

YOU GOT STROBES?!  When Eric and I rode it they said that they weren't working!  Hmmmmm....it's a conspiracy!  LOL.

If you see me running, try and keep up!

Was Viper open at all?
96 Viper will be closed all season but I did get a glimpse of the new trains in the station.
