Chris Sawyer sues Atari for RollerCoaster Tycoon royalties

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Software developer Chris Sawyer is suing Atari Interactive for $4.8 million, which he says the company owes him in unpaid royalties. Sawyer, who created the popular PC game RollerCoaster Tycoon, alleges that the company miscalculated payments made to him between 1999 and 2003. Atari’s revenue from Sawyer’s games, including Transport Tycoon and three versions of RollerCoaster Tycoon, is estimated to be about $180 million. Sawyer received about $30 million in royalties. He says that this figure falls short of what is due and lists 13 instances of payments that he says the company wrongly withheld or deducted from the sum he received.

Well if there was any question about why he wasn't that strongly involved in RCT3, there it is. If I made that much, I wouldn't be either. I'd pursue other things.

It's really awesome to hear that a software developer, especially a game developer, did that well on his own.

Go Chris Sawyer!

Actually, Just go back to doing RCT yourself, please? :)

*Puts on Roller Coaster Dork hat*

That's enough royalty money to watch a stratacoaster catastrophically fail in your own backyard! Ga-HURK!
