Following the announcement that Six Flags Great America's Whizzer would be spared, two Chicago papers talk to Six Flags president Gary Story and area residents who wanted to save the ride.

Just let someone punch you in the head and you can pretend that you did.

Yee of little faith! It can't be done, some said.......TADA!

It's done and STAYING!

Hey Pancake! That was uncalled for. You could have at least told him to do somersaults between beatings!

As I said in the other thread, I am all for saving a family ride. Thank you SF for listening to the public, though I still think this was planned to bring more guests ....:)

What is it with Great America removing rides with "Wave" in their name?

LOL Fierce Pancake & Arrow Guy. :)

Um, it wasn't saved because of our little petition. It was saved because somebody removed the managers heads from their behinds, so to speak... (family site censorship)
Redman822,

True. There are no minutes for ZBA prior to 1996, but, I know that their page has minutes from the Village Board back to 1976.

The process of getting height variances goes from the ZBA, and then final approval is by the Village Board. So, looking through those minutes, you can find when the park applied for variances for the big sign on I-94, along with a few other things.

Here's the link for the Village Board Meeting minutes back to November of 1976.

In fact, here's a link to the minutes from 1978 when the park wanted to hold an "Octoberfest" in Hometown Square:

Johnson moved, seconded by Leable to grant two (2) 72-hour beer licenses for October 7 and 8, and 14 and 15, 1978, to Marriott's GREAT AMERICA, which are to be used for "Octoberfest" activities in Hometown Square, at the cost of $25.00 each. All ayes; motion ~ carried .

This one has info on the opening movie that was shown in the Pictorium back in May of 1979:

I know that somewhere on the village of gurnee webpage there is a list of every Village Ordinance that has been put in place since like 1976...but right now, I can't find that page. That's how I know that one was not needed for Eagle.

I dont think this was a stunt at all year after year rumors circulated about the Whizzer being removed it sounds like it had been in the works for a while. It has to be a maitenence nightmare and expensive to keep running and none of the other parks with a Speedracer in the US were willing to deal with the attention and money they need to keep running. I don't think the park expected the public to react at all because they had no idea the ride had such a following. Either way it makes me very happy

Aughhh look out there are Mice all around

Ok, SFGAm is really pissing me off. Me and my brother went on a cursing rampage cuz shockwave is his favorite coaster in the park. I love the passing out feeling on the third loop. It's experiencing the shockwave after a nuclear bomb goes off with Radiation in it. It's Great! Sadly, I will miss it and I have one thing to say to SFGAm. F*ck U, but I can't stay mad at you forever.

Let The WHIZZER Live!

Calm down LinearGuy. In case you havent figured it out yet(which you obviously havent), the removal of Shockwave is just a rumor at this point.

Read what Gary Story said and form your own conclusion.

Ric Flair was hitting on the female host, he told her - "Space Mountain may be the oldest ride in the park, but it has the longest line." WOOOOO!
