Chicago paper gets skinny on Great America's new coasters

Posted | Contributed by SFGA_FAN

Questions about Six Flags Great America's new coasters, Vertical Velocity and Deja Vu, have been answered by The News Sun. The paper says V2 will open with a VIP preview on May 24, with the public opening that weekend. No word yet on the precise date for Deja Vu.

Cool, I can't wait! I am glad that it is now official!:)

So who gets to be the VIP? A lot of the parks around the country are doing special things for their season pass holders and I think Great America should follow suit with some ERT in the morning.

I still cant believe they lost the Sky Whirl!
Dude, the skywhirl sucked.
Sky Whirl did not "s**k" but it was becoming a maintenance headache for the park.

That's the same day as the media preview for V2 at SFMW. So they are opening them at the same time. Deja Vu at SFMM also has a preview that day as well. Interesting. Memorial Day weekend brings in lots-o-money, so having the new coasters open up is smart, brings in more money. Anyways, peace. :)
You can probably translate VIP to mean members of the media, actual celebrities, and maybe the local coaster club.

Why couldn't they have built a Vekoma Giant Wheel and some flat rides to go along with these coasters? Geeeez!
I am just thinking, if they are waiting for the 24th, do you think that they are going to open deja vu that same day too? I mean it would seem kind of strange to have a media day for one and not the other (or to have medai days for two seperate coasters). I wonder this cause it seems like V2 could open earlier, but perhaps they are delaying it so it can open with Deja Vu on memorial day weekend. If they allowed season pass holders to go to it that would be the greatest thing ever.......does anyone remember if they did that for raging bull......or if they let coaster club members attend......anyone??
The Sky Whirl didn't suck! It was a huge part of the skyline of Great America. No, it's no coaster. But it was a great 'break' ride. Wait a few mins to get on, then relax with great views (from basically the center of the park). For coaster freaks who like to take pictures, this was the best ride to do it from.

For alot of us who claim Great America as their home park, it also had a lot of sentimental value. When I was 6, I remember my Mom driving up to the park. There were three big things you saw, the Turn of the Century (now the Demon), the Sky Whirl, and the Tidal Wave (boo hoo on that too). (Oh, and a little of the Willard's Wizzard, sky trek tower, carousel and log flumes).

We got one of the best skylines!

coasterbill73,
You will be happy to know that your tidal Wave, now Viper inGeorgia, was running very nice. We got 15 rides in a row on her in the early morning.

According to my friend, the operation of the ride has changed since at SFGrAM: When it is returning to the station, it actually hits brakes before the station, and goes up the other tower about a third of the way, hence giving it a smoother stop.

I wish I could have experienced the ride in its full
At first I was pissed of when I heard that we were getting 2 inverted coasters and that neither of them were full circuit, but they are so big that I think they will be awesome!!! They should let season ticket holders in on media day because they are important too!!! Anyways... I think that just because we got 2 new rides this year doesn't mean we shouldn't get any next year.(kinda like the year after we got ragging bull)
oh yeah... and they should race American Eagle every day not just every once in awhile!!! I go there at least 4 times a year and they rarely are racing the two tracks!!!
Oh yeah, has anyone else never heard of the "News Sun"? Why didn't the Sun-Times, Tribune, or Herald report something on this?

For the love of all things holy, bring back the Sky Whirl AND let the Eagle fly like it used to!

An unnerving stillness in the woods of southern Indiana beckons for you on May 11th.....
Suburban Chicago News, is the "parent" of the Beacon, Courier, Daily Herald, and News Sun.

As far as why SCN (the News Sun in particular) covered this story (which have been moved to their archives at http://www.suburbanchicagonews.com/newssun/archives/w04sixflags.htm ) and the Trib and SunTimes didn't... Perhaps they asked the question while the Tribune and SunTimes are waiting for the invitation to media day?

They also probably had the story first because the News Sun is published in Waukegan and is Lake Countys major newspaper. Anything local(including SFGAm) usually gets covered quite often.

Ok,

As an employee for SFGA I can say I have already been on the ride. It has been open since Friday (May 18th, but it was open after the park closed on May 17th to the employees) and people have been on it. There is no real VIP day. Just that the ride hasn't operated for a full open day to the public. It has been running on and off during the day.

Also, for those of you wondering, the park is open to all people on MediaDay from 10-6 as part of its daily operation. *** This post was edited by ZW on 5/21/2001. ***
