I f you want some real fun we can talk about large HP single phase motors with streetcar type controllers with open wire resistors!

Like on a late model Dentzel like Kennywood's, or Idlewild's PTC. I seem to recall The Whip had that setup too, at least up untill the move to Lost Kennywood.

The reason the chain lifts on coasters were left running all the time in the "good old days" is because those motors drew 80 to 100 amps when starting. Once they got up to speed (which does take a little while) the amperage dropped way down. It was easier on the motor not to mention the electric bill to just let them run all day.
